Although he has been playing through a back injury since THE PLAYERS, Morikawa has been able to still turn in strong finishes. He had to withdraw at TPC Sawgrass, but he finished T7 in Augusta and T4 in Harbour Town in his two events since then.
Earlier this season, Morikawa won the Signature Event at Pebble Beach in February, and he has finished in the top 10 in four straight events after that, with the only exception being THE PLAYERS.
Back in 2021, Morikawa won the World Golf Championships-Workday Championship at The Concession on a similar course in Bradenton, Florida, and he has the kind of skill set that typically leads to success at The Blue Monster. Over the last three months, Morikawa leads this elite field in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green and Strokes Gained: Approach and is second in Total Strokes Gained over that span behind only Scottie Scheffler.
Dating back to the Baycurrent Classic last October, AdamScott has finished in the top 30 in 11 of 13 tournaments worldwide. During that stretch, he had top-10 finishes at the BMW Australian Championship, the Crown Australian Open, and The Genesis Invitational, which is another Signature Event held on a course where he has had success. He finished in the top 25 in Augusta before a couple weeks off to prepare for his return to Doral.
He has a great history at the Blue Monster, including a win in 2016, the last time the PGA TOUR visited the venue. That win was his sixth straight top-25 finish on this course, which included a third-place finish in 2013 and a top-5 finish in 2015 before his win.
He returns with good form and ranks fourth in the field in Strokes Gained Approach and is also in the top 10 in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green. With so much form and history, he has a good chance to end up in the top 20 this week, with the potential for an even higher finish as well.
I highlighted Coody in my fantasy golf pivot plays for this week, and in this SGP, I’m taking him to finish ahead of Justin Thomas for the tournament. Coody was hot to start the year before struggling in Florida and dealing with a back issue. He looked strong in his return two weeks ago at the RBC Heritage, posting a T16.
Thomas also played the RBC Heritage but he finished T77 after rounds of 76 and 75 to start the week. He was the defending champion in that event, but he struggled badly, losing strokes on approach and around the green as well as putting. He did have a strong T8 at THE PLAYERS but is still working his way back to form after missing the first several months of the season after a microdiscectomy surgery. He has a high ceiling when healthy and in form, but the younger Coody has looked better and fits the course layout well.
