Alex Hunter provides his top one and done golf pick for the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
After starting the season in questionable form, Aberg has been on a tear and very close to claiming his third PGA TOUR win. The Swede has finished T3rd, T5th, T5th, T21st and T4th in his last five starts.
That final finish came at the RBC Heritage three weeks ago, which is a no-cut Signature Event like the Truist Championship. During this five-start stretch, Aberg has shot under par in 16-of-20 rounds, including rounds of 63 at both THE PLAYERS Championship and RBC Heritage.
Aberg now heads to Quail Hollow Club for the Truist Championship. The 26-year-old has only competed at this course once and that came at last year’s PGA Championship, when he missed the cut by two shots. However, Aberg wasn’t playing well leading up to this, finishing T54th and T60th in his previous two starts. Aberg is obviously in much better form now and his game sets up well for Quail Hollow.
At 7,583 yards, this par 71 is the third-longest course on the PGA TOUR schedule this season. Being a strong driver is essential at Quail Hollow and Aberg has been awesome in this department this season, ranking eighth in total driving.
The Texas Tech product also ranks 20th in SG APP and eighth in proximity to the hole on approach shots from 200+ yards, both of which bode very well for Quail Hollow. At the last five events played at this famous track, every winner has finished the week top-12 in SG APP and 31.3% of the approach shots have come from 200+ yards, which is a big difference from the PGA TOUR average of 23.3%.
Aberg is a real threat to win his second attempt at Quail Hollow this week and he shouldn’t be a popular pick for one and done pools, given his lack of experience at Quail Hollow and that many have already used him this season. In my pool, Aberg is only available for 41% of the field.
On DraftKings Sportsbook, Aberg presents the fifth-best odds to win the Truist Championship at +1750.
