Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell will both be sidelined tonight, paving the way for Jared McCain’s workload in the offense to remain high. After the former Duke guard arrived at the trade deadline, McCain has carved out a nice role on this Thunder team. His skill set is especially necessary with the level of defensive attention that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is seeing and without the pair of injured impact players available. McCain has scored 20+ points twice in this series and has taken 10+ field-goal attempts in five straight games. He is averaging 13.3 points per game overall and is coming off back-to-back starts in which he has played 27+ minutes in each. Between his fearlessness attacking the basket and quick release on three-point shots, McCain is not shy with his role in the offense and his biggest responsibility is to put up points. Count on him to see a healthy dose of minutes tonight and for 12 points to be a comfortable bar to clear.
This is the biggest game of Victor Wembanyama’s young career. The first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year sets the tone for this entire Spurs team and made this known with his offensive output in the early stages of Game 6. Expect more of the same tonight with the season on the line. Overall, Wembanyama averaged exactly 25.0 points per game across the regular season and 23.3 across the playoffs. He is scoring 28.2 points per game in this series, and he has tallied 25+ points in four of the six matchups. There is still no answer for his size and skill set on this Thunder roster, or really any in the NBA. Wembanyama is fully aware of the weight of the moment and his importance to this Spurs team. While the supporting cast is deserving of plenty of compliments, San Antonio will only go as far as Wembanyama will take it. Expect him to come out firing and tally 25+ points for the fifth time in this series.
It has been a disappointing series for De’Aaron Fox. The two-time All-Star missed a pair of games due to injury, and he has not played to his peak when he has been available. Fox has been held below 10 points in back-to-back games and shot just 1-for-9 in the previous matchup. This has put more responsibility onto the shoulders of Stephon Castle, who has done an impressive job answering the call. After posting averages of 16.7 points, 7.4 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game across the regular season, the former Rookie of the Year is producing 19.4 points, 6.7 assists and 4.9 rebounds in the playoffs. In just this series alone, the UConn product is tallying 18.3 points, 7.8 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game. Castle has tallied 25+ combined points, rebounds and assists in five of the six games this series. The Spurs need their young star to continue meeting the weight of the moment and there will be plenty asked of him tonight. Expect Castle to make his impact felt all across the box score and for him to see plenty of opportunity on the floor. Back the 25+ combined points, rebounds and assists to be a comfortable bar to clear and for Castle to continue delivering for this Spurs team.
It has been an up-and-down series for Isaiah Hartenstein. Victor Wembanyama is a matchup problem any way you choose to guard him, but the Thunder have trusted Hartenstein to take the challenge at a more frequent rate as the series has progressed. He has played as few as 12:10 of game time and as many as 33:38 across the six games thus far. Across the regular season, the 28-year-old averaged 9.4 rebounds per game and tallied eight or more in 30 of his 47 games played. Since the playoffs kicked off, Hartenstein is averaging 8.6 rebounds per game and has tallied eight or more rebounds in 10 of the 14 games. He has tallied 15 and 13 rebounds in the past two home games in this series, and he recorded eight or more rebounds in three of the six games overall. Expect both teams to prioritize defense tonight and for Hartenstein’s interior presence to be called on at a high rate. He is one of the better rebounders in the league and back him to receive the proper workload to record at least eight rebounds in this Game 7 matchup.
