For three whole seasons, The Mandalorian lived on the Disney+ streaming service. Now, after three years off, the lead characters have returned for Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, the franchise’s first big-screen movie since 2019. The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda – Din Djarin and Grogu, to be formal – are now among Star Wars’ most popular and iconic characters, driving the story in a galaxy far, far away between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

What happens in Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu?

The Mandalorian, now working as a contractor for the New Republic, has gotten into a rhythm taking out Imperial remnants with the help of Grogu and Zeb. Colonel Ward tasks them with rescuing Rotta the Hutt, the son of Jabba the Hutt, in order to get information from Rotta’s aunt and uncle about a mysterious former Imperial officer. Mando tracks down Rotta, who does not want to be saved since he is finally about to pay off his debts to a local crime lord. As it turns out, though, that crime lord plans to kill Rotta in the fighting pits before he can win his freedom. That crime lord is also the Imperial war lord who Ward was looking for – Janu Coin.

Din fights Rotta in Coin’s colisseum, then joins forces with the Hutt to escape the planet. Instead of turning Rotta over to his aunt and uncle, who want to kill Jabba’s last remaining heir, Mando uses his intel to capture Coin. He then returns home to Nevarro and sends Rotta off into hiding. However, the Hutts send a bounty hunter of their own to capture Mando and Rotta and bring them back to Nal Hutta. Grogu escapes the fight, then teams up with some local Anzellans to follow them.

The Hutts remove Din’s helmet and look upon his face – a big no-no in traditional, cultist Mandalorian culture – then drop him down a trap door to fight some monsters. Grogu arrives to save his father figure, then after some time licking their wounds, they start an all-out attack against the Hutts. Din and Grogu save Rotta, sacrifice the Hutt twins to their killer monsters, then get the New Republic to bomb the droid-infested crime nest.

Does Din Djarin die in Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu?

No, Din Djarin does not die in his first movie appearance. The Mandalorian does come very close to death, though, after fighting off a dragonsnake on Nal Hutta. The dragonsnake lands a bite on Mando, who escapes the watery pit and carves his way through some droids before falling victim to the beast’s poison.

Grogu eventually saves an unconscious Mando from some scavenger bugs, then hides his body from more droids. After stealing some fish from a local swamp creature, Grogu befriends the alien. The kind being ultimately cooks up an antidote for Din, which Grogu brings back to feed him. Mando is up on his feet the next morning and proceeds to make it through the final battle with the Hutts.

The trailer featured several lines that hinted towards Din’s potential death. For one, the Hutt twins said that Grogu would live far beyond him. Din himself also recited part of the Mandalorian creed that as the old protect the young, the young must one day protect the old. Both lines did, in fact, appear in the final cut of the film, just with more context around them. The Hutts said their line while threatening to hunt Grogu down, while Din said the young and old quote after Grogu revived him.

There are no publicly available plans when it comes to the future of The Mandalorian sub-franchise, either on TV or cinematically. But with both title characters surviving their first adventure on the big screen, they could theoretically return for a The Mandalorian Season 4, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu 2 or in Ahsoka Season 2.
