Top MLB DFS Targets

Pitcher Studs

SP Justin Wrobleski (LAD), $8,400: The Dodgers have a simply incredible ability to find new arms. After largely working as a reliever last season, Justin Wrobleski has stepped into the rotation and looks incredible. The underlying numbers back up his 1.50 ERA, and he has surrendered only two earned runs over his last four starts combined. The mix of strikeout stuff and ability to pitch deep in games makes him a great fantasy value against a middling Cardinals lineup.

SP Steven Matz (TB), $8,200: Facing the San Francisco Giants automatically makes you playable, but Steven Matz is no slouch. He keeps the walks down, misses enough bats, and avoids enough hard contact to get by. Against a Giants lineup that is allergic to drawing walks and hitting home runs, he is a fantastic play coming off his best start of the year.

Pitcher Value Plays

SP Chad Patrick (MIL), $7,400: The Brewers pitching machine keeps on churning. Chad Patrick is the latest arm to pop, posting a 2.57 ERA through six turns on the mound to start the year. His cutter has been blowing up bats, and he makes up for the lack of strikeouts with good distance and low potential for a blow-up. Against a top-heavy Washington lineup, Patrick is the best value play on a very rough SP board.

Infield Studs

1B Ben Rice (NYY), $5,800: Hide from it, run from it, the truth arrives all the same: Ben Rice is one of the elite hitters in MLB. He was great last year, but has reached a new level this season. Rice bumped up his batting average to .330 on Saturday with a monstrous 1.160 OPS. He draws lots of walks, bashes home runs, and always finds a way to contribute. Ben Arroz is more than worth the price of admission.

SS Elly De La Cruz (CIN), $6,100: Here’s another stud to anchor your lineup. Elly De La Cruz doesn’t bring the same consistency you get from a Ben Rice type, but when he gets it going, he can deliver a win all by himself. The immense extra-base hit and stolen base potential make him the ultimate upside play, and that plays well in a series that has been full of runs.

Infield Value Plays

C Dalton Rushing (LAD), $4,000: Dalton Rushing isn’t making many friends these past couple of weeks, but he is ripping it up at the plate. In a timeshare of sorts with Will Smith, Rushing has made the best of things, batting .348 with an OPS well over 1.000. I’m all in on fading Cardinals starter Dustin May, who should get knocked around by his former Dodger teammates in this spot.

1B/2B Ildemaro Vargas (ARI), $4,200: This is the hottest hitter in baseball. Saturday snapped the journeyman’s 27-game hitting streak, the longest MLB hitting streak in four years. That 0-for-4 game dropped his batting average to an astounding .387. The bottom is bound to fall out eventually, but I’ll take the value on the hot bat.

3B Max Muncy (LAD), $4,200: Score one for LASIK surgery. Since getting his eyes fixed, Max Muncy has been one of the best hitters in baseball, and continues to cook this season. The Dodgers vet has already smashed nine home runs and will be eager to take some swings against Dustin May. Count on a big game from the big man.

Outfield Studs

OF Jordan Walker (STL), $5,100: This breakout has been truly special. Jordan Walker has five straight games with a hit and an RBI after crushing his 10th home run of the season on Saturday, with an OPS approaching 1.000. Wrobleski is a tough matchup on the other side, but Walker has the sweet swing and massive potential to capitalize on this price.

Outfield Value Plays

OF Chandler Simpson (TB), $4,000: Chandler Simpson is one of my favorite watches in the sport. He slaps balls all around, runs like the wind, and has elite base-stealing craft. He managed to score another run from the top of Tampa Bay’s lineup and has a hit in five of his last six games. Don’t expect a home run any time soon, but you can get more than enough with a single or two and some base running magic.

OF Garrett Mitchell (MIL), $3,700: Here’s another guy getting a solid amount of time at the leadoff spot. Garrett Mitchell doesn’t have stats that pop off the page, but the underlying numbers indicate a big breakout is coming. Facing a struggling Nationals pitching staff, he could be in line for a big night at the top of the lineup.
