Following a strong seventh episode that sent home former winner Dee Valladares, Survivor 50 returned Wednesday night with the eighth installment of the show’s most anticipated season yet. Including spoilers for who was voted out, let’s recap Survivor 50 Episode 8: Double The Fun, Double The Demise.
Episode 8 opened up with a classic Coach victory parade, although the Dragonslayer was a bit apprehensive after back-to-back tribals featured his name being thrown around quite a bit. As a result, Coach was determined to take a step back and lower his threat level. His alliance once again set their sights on “the middle people” to avoid potential flipping situations. Meanwhile, Ozzy did some damage control, bringing Tiffany back into the fold the lay the groundwork for a potential Coach blindside.
In a season full of the most twists in Survivor history, another tally was added to the chalkboard this week. A boat pulled up to camp, asking the tribemates to divide themselves into pairs. The following couplets were formed:
Cirie was the odd woman out and was sent to Exile Island as a result. As it turns out, this was the most favorable possible outcome. Upon arriving at the immunity challenge, it was revealed that for the first time in 50 seasons, one of the losing pairs would be voted out together as a duo.
In the challenge, the Tiffany/Joe, Ozzy/Steph and Aubry/Devens duos moved on to the next round. After a slow start, Joe and Tiffany prevailed on the final maze, earning dual immunity.
Cirie was greeted at Exile Island by a literal sea of coconuts. The Survivor legend was presented with an intriguing challenge: flip over the coconut with a phoenix on it, and depart Exile with a vote at tribal tonight while maintaining her immunity. After a grueling search in the sun, Cirie found the correct coconut, putting her in a great position to put a stamp on this season.
Back at camp, the duos began scrambling to figure out how to attack this unforeseen twist. Coach and Chrissy were unsurprisingly thrown out by multiple groups, but the latter had her sights on a Rizo blindside. Then, Cirie returned to camp, immediately declaring that the Dragonslayer and Chrissy had to go. To put it simply, Joe wasn’t a fan of that plan. The fire captain wanted the “two snakes” gone in Aubry and Devens, believing that Coach was a loyal vote.
Heading into tribal council, three pairs appeared to potentially be on the chopping block. Believing they were in serious danger, Devens sprung into action, wreaking havoc by seizing the (fake) idol he and Christian planted long before the merge. Credit to Rick, because he sold it incredibly well, causing a massive scramble. This directly caused Coach and Chrissy to play their shot in the dark… unsuccessfully.
In the end, the ambitious fake idol paid off. Benjamin “Coach” Wade and Chrissy Hofbeck were voted off, becoming the second and third members of the Survivor 50 jury.
