Charlie Cummings previews Sunday’s MLB matchup between the Detroit Tigers and the Baltimore Orioles and provides his best pick.
These two American League teams are stumbling out of the gate. The Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles would both like a do-over of their first 50-plus games. Can either of them steady the ship? Or will it be a long, slow march to an anticlimactic finish?
First pitch is set for 12:35 p.m. ET. The Orioles are -127 moneyline favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook, while a Tigers upset is priced at +105. The game total is set at O/U eight runs.
Let’s get into a pick and prediction for this Tigers vs. Orioles game.
First things first, let’s get to know these starting pitchers.
Framber Valdez toes the rubber for the Tigers on Sunday. The prize acquisition of the offseason for Detroit has not lived up to his billing so far. The 32-year-old southpaw has pitched to a 4.58 ERA through ten starts, and the peripherals haven’t looked good either. He’s still generating a lot of ground balls, but the hard contact is up, and his strikeout stuff is way down. It’s an awfully tough formula.
With Valdez on the mound, all you’re going to see is movement — unless he’s trying to hit you with a pitch. Sinkers, changeups, curveballs, and the occasional slider. It may not be as effective as it used to be, but he can still put together good starts when he’s inducing soft contact.
Opposite him is right-hander Brandon Young. At 27 years old, Young is getting an extended look in the Birds’ rotation after their early-season struggles. The results haven’t been great so far; Young gives up a lot of hard contact, struggles to punch batters out, and has a poor ground ball rate. That’s not a recipe for success in the big leagues. But with the rest of their rotation rapidly imploding, they might as well trot him out every fifth day to see if he can figure it out.
Both offenses have been around the middle of the pack this season. Baltimore took a big swing by adding Pete Alonso, and overall, the results have been… meh. Detroit’s regression across the board has been jarring and part of the reason why they’re over 10 games below .500. Both lineups have to do a lot better if they want to turn their seasons around.
Now that we know these teams a bit better, who is going to take this one home?
Neither offense has performed up to its talent level this season. But both of these pitchers are primed for some slapping about. Throw in a couple of bullpens with inconsistent results, and you’ve got the potential for some serious high scoring in this one. The value here is on the over.
