We head to  Shinnecock Hills (par 70, 7,440 yards, Bentgrass/Poa mixed greens) in Southampton, New York for the U.S. Open. Shinnecock most recently hosted the U.S. Open in 2004 and 2018. Brooks Koepka (+1) won by one stroke in 2018. There will be 156 golfers competing and a top-60 and ties cut after the first two rounds this week.

Aaron Rai to make the cut

Rai missed the cut at the RBC Canadian Open last week, but he only did so by one stroke. Rai still gained strokes on approach for the sixth straight start at TPC Toronto and it was only his third missed cut in his last 15 solo starts. Rai is only a month removed from his three-shot win at the PGA Championship and has finished inside the top-25 five times in 12 starts this season. His irons have been exceptional, ranking 17th in SG APP. He also ranks second in driving accuracy, which bodes well for Shinnecock since avoiding the thick rough here will be crucial. After missing the cut in his major debut at the U.S. Open in 2017, Rai has finished T19th and T33rd at the last two editions of this major. In fact, his win at the PGA Championship last month is Rai’s ninth consecutive made cut at the major level.

Ryan Gerard to make the cut

Gerard is playing the best golf of his career right now. The 26-year-old last competed at the Memorial, where he nearly secured his second PGA TOUR win, losing to J.T. Poston in a playoff at Muirfield Village. This finish came after Gerard finished T10th at the Charles Schwab Challenge, with these two performances alone moving him up 14 spots in the world golf rankings to a career-best No. 23. This season, Gerard has made 14-of-16 solo cuts and ranks top-30 in SG APP, total driving and par four performance. At the U.S. Open, Gerard has made two-of-three cuts, and that lone missed cut came in his major debut back in 2022. This is Gerard’s only missed cut in six starts at the major level and the ascending talent has a much better chance of making the cut this week than these -148 odds suggest.

Brian Harman to make the cut

Harman missed the cut at the Memorial his last time out, but this wasn’t shocking by any means as he has struggled at Muirfield Village throughout his career, making only four-of-12 cuts at Jack’s Place. Leading up to this, Harman had advanced through the cut at 11 consecutive events while carding four top-25 finishes along the way. Harman made the cut at both the Masters and PGA Championship during this span, and he has been a very dependable cut maker at the U.S. Open. Harman missed the cut in his first two attempts at this major, but he hasn’t looked back since, making the cut at eight straight U.S. Opens. Harman finished runner-up at Erin Hills in 2017 and he finished T36th at Shinnecock the next year. As evident from him winning the Open at Royal Liverpool in 2023, Harman knows how to navigate challenging courses. The savvy veteran should make the cut at Shinnecock for the second time this week.
