A major character was just killed in The Boys. Here’s a breakdown of Season 5 Episode 6, and what it means for the show going forward.
With three hours remaining in The Boys, judgement day is coming for fan favorites and villains alike. To the surprise of no one, this week’s episode had a bit of everything: action, drama and a gruesome death.
Let’s break down every major death and plot development for season five’s sixth installment, titled “Though The Heavens Fall”.
(Warning: Spoilers for The Boys Season 5, Episode 6 ahead.)
Episode six got started with The Legend, played by the great Paul Reiser. Working at a movie theater under the alias Chet Vanderbilt, he’s approached by Mother’s Milk. Once a senior vice president at Vought, he’s now in hiding due to incriminating information he has on the company. MM asks Legend whether he can get in contact with Bombsight, the key to acquiring highly coveted V-One. Despite some reluctance, a pointed threat helps ‘convince’ the old-school mogul to help out.
Side note: loved this week’s AMC-style Nicole Kidman intro, starring the recently deceased Firecracker.
Elsewhere, Annie and Hughie have been tasked with setting up a virus spray, via air freshener, for Homelander’s coronation at the Democratic Church of America. Despite some objection to killing a whole room of supes, Butcher convinces The Boys (sans Frenchie) that this is their best option. Once there, Annie (with Hughie backstage) is confronted by Oh Father. When the latter begins using his super-powered voice, Hughie reveals that he has possession of the virus and threatens to release it. Backed into a corner, Oh Father lets the two go. However, any plans to poison Homelander appear to have fallen short.
As for Butcher and company, their mission is to locate the previously mentioned Bombsight. That means finding his elderly wife, Golden Geisha, now living at The Villages, a supe retirement community. Despite the urging of Legend, she refuses to go along with the plan. After some brief (and hilarious) resistance, the team captures the former star and holds her hostage. Legend, disgusted with Butcher’s enchant for violence, throws in the towel and leaves The Boys behind.
Back in New York, Sister Sage is hoping to play both sides against one another. Episode five, “One-Shots”, revealed that the super genius hopes to spark a human-hero war. In the aftermath, she would finally get some much-needed time alone. In the meantime, she tells Deep to sign off on a public statement supporting Vought’s new Alaskan pipeline. Sure, millions of fish might die, but that shouldn’t get in the way of Homelander’s big plans. With a tinge of sadness, Deep complies.
It’s here where Sage really kicks things into second gear. She destroys a Vought tracking chip in her body, officially making her move against Homelander. Then, the former Seven member finds The Boys, holding Geisha hostage at their headquarters. Despite Butcher’s hesitance, a shared enemy brings these two unlikely allies together. They then take a picture of the supe legend and send it to Bombsight.
Just when The Legend thought he was out, he gets pulled back. Homelander found him at, where else, the movie theater, and demanded a word (after brutally murdering a co-worker). Legend insists he isn’t working with The Boys anymore, even though there’s security footage of him with them at The Villages. He shows Homelander their new headquarters, which seem to be missing any form of evidence. That is, with one exception: a Taco Bell receipt. That’s a dead giveaway that chulupa-loving Sage has betrayed Vought. Legend, assuming that his time is near, gives Homelander an empathetic talk about the rise and fall of supes. He suggests that immortality is impossible, even for demigods. Homelander, in a rare display of mercy, spares his life.
Meanwhile, things aren’t going great for The Deep. The previously mentioned pipeline has burst, for some mysterious reason. He visits the now oil-covered site, where a fish tells him “we know it was you.” With countless sea creatures now dead, Deep has officially signed off on an ecological disaster. Back in New York, he’s mocked by an unsympathetic Black Noir, who reveals that he’s the one who dented the pipeline. Keep in mind, there’s been some beef between the two all season. During last week’s episode, Noir’s acting mentor Adam Bourke suffered a gruesome death via eel. In an act of rage, Deep strangles his former best bud, then sticks a knife through his jaw.
Bombsight eventually catches up with The Boys at the warehouse, with a vial of V-One in his pocket. The immortal supe gets into a scrap with Butcher and Kimiko, while MM and Frenchie fire off bullets. However, that’s when Soldier Boy finally arrives. Much to the shock of The Boys, he was tipped off to the situation by Sage. She assumes the old-schooler hates Homelander as much as she does, and will destroy the V-One as a result. After a quick fight, Soldier Boy comes close to killing Bombsight. However, his former rival begs to be unburdened from his immortality, allowing him to live out life with his wife Golden Geisha. Soldier Boy grants his request in exchange for the V-One vial.
It’s then when Homelander finally arrives on the scene. Sage assumes Soldier Boy will destroy the V-One, because people are predictable; her calculations are incorrect. Instead, he hands over the drug to his son in a surprising twist. The pair have had an on-and-off relationship for the entire show, especially this season. Now, it appears they are finally united. As for Homelander, a quick shot in the arm means immortality.
Your guess is as good as mine! With just two episodes remaining, the stakes have never been higher. Homelander appears to be invincible, but it’s difficult to imagine there won’t be a hitch in his plan for global domination. The fate of several supes, such as Ashley, Deep, Sister Sage and Soldier Boy are uncertain as well.
That’s without mentioning The Boys, who have failed in their quest to destroy V-One. Where do these vigilantes go from here? Will Butcher succeed in his mission to finally take out Homelander? Time is running out; the answers to those questions (and more) will be revealed over the next two weeks.
Black Noir was killed by The Deep, ending a long-simmering feud between the two friends turned rivals.
New episodes of the series will continue to come out on Wednesday mornings at 3 am ET/12 am PT.
Season 5 is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Seasons 1 through 4 are also on Prime Video if you are looking to catch up.
Season five’s eight episode installment will be the final season of The Boys.
