St. Louis Cardinals vs. San Diego Padres prediction, pick...
Dan Johnson · 2026-06-15 · via DraftKings Network

Dan Johnson takes you through his preview, prediction, and best bet for today’s baseball game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres.

The Padres reach Busch Stadium with a cleaner weekend behind them and a harder ask in front of them. San Diego is 37-33 after taking two of three in Baltimore, with 17 runs and six homers since Friday. St. Louis is 38-31, back home after a 5-4 loss that followed a six-game winning streak. The market has already noticed the Cardinals’ run, so the question is where to attack it. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Cardinals vs. Padres prediction, preview

Lucas Giolito gives St. Louis the cleanest pressure point in the matchup. His 4.35 ERA and 1.74 WHIP come with 14 strikeouts and 18 walks across 20.2 innings. He has reached five innings once in five starts, which threatens San Diego’s middle relief early. The low 3.2% barrel rate keeps the profile tricky, yet the command problem is massive. Dustin May has the steadier form with 24 strikeouts, three walks, and four earned runs over his last 18.2 innings. His hard contact allowed keeps San Diego live, but his arsenal gives him more escape routes.

JJ Wetherholt is the hinge because he can make Giolito pitch from traffic immediately. His .352 xwOBA, 16.6% strikeout rate, and 11.0% walk rate fit this assignment perfectly. Iván Herrera gives the next plate appearance patience, damage, and a .372 wOBA/xwOBA pairing. Alec Burleson is carrying the loudest bat here, with a .310 average, six homers, and 12 RBI over 10 games. Jordan Walker supplies the punishment swing at 94.5 mph average exit velocity, 52.1% hard contact, and 13.9% barrels. Blaze Jordan and Jimmy Crooks also make the lower third more stressful than it looked in April. Gorman’s demotion and Nootbaar’s return turned those plate appearances into nightly pressure.

San Diego’s counter starts with Fernando Tatis Jr., whose June has steadied a broken lineup. He is hitting .318 over his last 10, and the underlying contact still beats the surface line. Jackson Merrill brings a similar rebound case with 47.3% hard contact and a .318 xwOBA. Manny Machado adds volatility, because the production remains thin amid louder frustration around his offensive approach. Rodolfo Duran is the strange bottom-order spark after homering 432 feet Sunday while covering for Freddy Fermin. That gives Padres team total over 3.5 life, though May’s form still blocks my preferred path.

Padres vs. Cardinals pick, best bet

The late innings make the full-game side messier than the offensive matchup. San Diego used Bradgley Rodriguez, Jason Adam, Adrian Morejon, and Mason Miller to close Sunday’s win. Miller still threw four outs, so the Padres’ best weapon carries some usage tax. St. Louis also watched JoJo Romero and George Soriano lose a 4-2 lead Sunday. That bullpen scar makes Cardinals ML -157 feel heavier than the run-scoring angle. Busch Stadium should play clean, with first-pitch temperatures near 75 degrees and no rain threat. Confirmed lineups and umpire are the last checks.

The best bet is Cardinals team total over 4.5 at -105, playable to -120. It targets Giolito’s walks, St. Louis’ top-four heat, and the lineup’s new bottom-half length. Cardinals ML asks the bullpen to protect the work, and the full-game over needs enough Padres support. Padres team total over 3.5 is viable, yet it needs May’s hard contact to beat his current command. I would rather bet the team with the hotter lineup against the less stable starter.

Best bet: Cardinals team total over 4.5.

Projected score: Cardinals 5, Padres 3.

Best bet: Cardinals TT o4.5 runs (-105) vs. Padres
