The Marlins have the luxury of facing Simeon Woods Richardson tonight at Target Field. Woods Richardson is in the midst of his worst season yet, currently posting a 6.92 ERA, an xERA of 5.75, and a 6.20 FIP. He was never a big strikeout pitcher, but his strikeout rate has cratered to 4.3 K/9 through eight starts. That means hitters are making a lot of contact, and it’s coming at a 46% hard-hit rate. Woods Richardson has also allowed at least four earned runs in five of his eight starts.
Woods Richardson is a heavy four-seam fastball pitcher, throwing that pitch 40% of the time. Tonight’s expected Marlins lineup combines for a .350 wOBA and a .192 ISO against it. Once he departs, he’ll give way to a Twins bullpen that simply hasn’t been getting the job done lately. Over the past two weeks, the Twins bullpen has combined for a 6.42 ERA with a 4.31 FIP and a 5.4 BB/9. The Marlins should have a lot of opportunities to do some damage against the Twins.
I like this spot for Busch against Braves starter JR Ritchie. We haven’t seen much of Ritchie at the major league level, but in that sample, he’s posted a .435 wOBA with an 8.43 FIP and all four home runs he’s allowed to left-handed bats. Busch has been hitting in the lower half of the lineup, he should have plenty of opportunities with runners on base. Ritchie’s command has been very poor through his three starts, a trait that was also seen in the minors. He currently owns a 6.2 BB/9, issuing 12 walks in 17.1 innings.
I think we’ll see a good dose of offense in the first half of this game. Ryne Nelson will oppose Kumar Rocker at Globe Life Field with the roof open and the temperature in the low 80s. Nelson has been extremely inconsistent when he takes the mound, posting a 5.68 ERA with a 5.08 xERA and a 5.12 FIP. Home runs have been a major issue as he’s allowed eight in eight starts, giving him a 1.8 HR/9. This Rangers lineup has some pop to it, so he could easily run into trouble again.
Kumar Rocker will throw for the Rangers and also has an ERA and xERA above 5 through seven starts. Lefties have been his biggest issue, and the D-Backs can load up on them. They’ll likely have either five or six in the lineup tonight to face Rocker. In those matchups, Rocker has been tagged for a .376 wOBA with a 4.53 FIP and a 13% BB%. Between both pitchers, we could see a lot of traffic on the bases, which has me taking over 4.5 runs through the first five innings.
