Bryan Armetta breaks down the biggest risers and fallers for Survivor 50 following Wednesday’s tenth episode, ‘A Side Dish of Chaos’.
Well, that just happened. Another twist for the ages – courtesy of MrBeast – sent the cast of Survivor 50 scrambling in episode ten. In the aftermath, old-school legend Stephenie LaGrossa-Kendrick’s time on the island has come to a close. However, the impacts of this week’s epic vote out (and coin flip) haven’t been fully felt yet.
Nine players are left this season, with a now-doubled $2 million dollar prize on the line. Who are gaining momentum, and who is losing steam, on Survivor 50?
The queen remains firmly seated atop her throne. Just about everyone’s name was floated during this week’s episode. That includes Rizo and, notably, Ozzy. However, there wasn’t much indication that anyone, even rivals Jonathan and Stephenie, were considering voting out Cirie. How does she keep getting away with this? Obviously, we’re talking about one of the greatest Survivor players of all time. It’s easy to critique the rest of this cast from the comfort of your couch. Still, she’s pulling all the strings on 50 without registering so much as a blip on the radar.
What’s made Cirie’s game so impressive this season is that she’s shielded both herself and her close allies. Ozzy has been a frequent target for what seems like weeks at this point. Still, her fellow old-schooler hasn’t felt compelled to use his immunity idol even once. People such as Steph, in a costly move, keep blurting out their plans to the five-time returnee. To make things more enticing, Ozzy and Rizo both have idols while Cirie still holds an extra vote. In short, this powerful trio has plenty of tricks up their sleeves.
He’s not quite at the top of this list, but we had to mention Devens following Wednesday’s gutsy move. Let’s start with tribal council, where the former Edge of Extinction castaway exposed Jonathan and Stephenie in front of everyone. In theory, revealing deception should have bought Rick another day in this game, especially now that everyone knows he doesn’t possess a real immunity idol. Still, being the gambler that he is, the two-time returnee wass willing to play with fire.
MrBeast’s much-hyped beware advantage was a nail-biting moment for everyone. If a player correctly called head or tails on a coin flip, they would:
The catch? Failure to guess the right side of the coin meant elimination. A 50% chance of going home outweighs all those positives for most players, but not Rick. He opted in with no hesitation and emerged victorious. Now, the oft-targeted Cila member has a real idol to play with, a dangerous thought for this cast. In addition, allies Aubry and Emily remain in this game, despite a close call for the former. He’s not quite in that elite contender tier, but Devens has resurrected his chances at winning Survivor 50.
There weren’t a ton of players that saw their stock drop this week, but Jonathan stands out. His number one ally, Stephenie, was sent packing in a decisive vote. This came after Rick called out the pair for targeting Ozzy during tribal council. As the leader of a minority alliance, or at least what’s left of it, Jonathan isn’t in a great spot. The challenge beast is without someone he can truly trust right now, a difficult position at this late stage of the game. To make matters worse, swing voters such as Devens, Emily and Aubry all seemed to go against his wishes.
Rebuilding a coalition that can challenge the Cirie alliance won’t be easy. That’s especially true when you’re a challenge beast with nowhere to hide. Granted, the all-around athlete is more than capable of reeling off an immunity win or two. Still, that’s a rare occurrence in the modern era of Survivor. Rick and Jonathan have been on the opposite side of several votes. Bringing the wildcard into the fold, especially with his newfound idol, is crucial. Jonathan has had his finger on the pulse of this season, correctly assessing Cirie and Ozzy as major threats. That level of perception could help him extend his stay in Fiji.
