Griffin Wong details his top Rudy Gobert prop bet for tonight’s Game 5 of the Timberwolves-Spurs series.
The era of elite rim-protecting French centers began a decade ago, when Rudy Gobert first broke out as a regular starter and Defensive Player of the Year candidate with the Utah Jazz. With Victor Wembanyama now dominant, France’s reign over the interior (and the DPOY award) looks as if it will extend at least another decade.
Gobert and Wembanyama are currently facing off in their first playoff series, which is tied 2-2 after Gobert’s Minnesota Timberwolves held on to win Game 4 against Wembanyama’s San Antonio Spurs. In that game, Wembanyama was ejected in the second quarter for throwing an elbow at Naz Reid’s neck. Game 5, a must-win for both teams, will begin tonight at 8:10 p.m. ET in San Antonio. The Spurs are still favored to win the series, but if Gobert can slow down his compatriot tonight, it’d surely change the fortunes in Minnesota’s favor.
The Timberwolves are 10.5-point underdogs for tonight’s clash at DraftKings Sportsbook, with the total set to 218.5. Below, I’ve detailed my favorite Gobert-centered prop bet for those looking to get in on the action.
Gobert recorded a double-double on Sunday night, finishing with 11 points and 13 rebounds, and while some of that can be attributed to Wembanyama’s early ejection, he already had five points by the time the younger man had departed. All in all, he’s had four double-doubles in 10 games so far these playoffs and had 33 double-doubles in 76 games during the regular season, so +341 represents excellent value. Gobert is a very low-usage player, averaging more rebounds than points per game for the third time in his career, but he scored 10 points in a majority of his regular-season games, so it’s just a matter of putting it together.
Of course, Gobert’s less-than-elite offense and paint-bound game makes scoring a difficult task against the unanimous Defensive Player of the Year, but Wembanyama is more of a help-side rover than a pure rim protector, giving Gobert some potential opportunities to get away from him. Wembanyama has guarded Gobert for a plurality of his possessions this series (98.9), but he’s also guarded Jaden McDaniels for 42.3, Julius Randle for 24.3, and Naz Reid for 18.9, giving Gobert matchups with weaker defenders in Luke Kornet (83.2 partial possessions) and Devin Vassell (17.8). Neither of these teams has shot very efficiently this series, as San Antonio ranks fourth-to-last in true shooting percentage among the eight conference semifinals participants and Minnesota ranks last, so there should be plenty of rebound chances available. Wembanyama will reach double-digit boards too — he’s the league’s best defensive rebounder — but Gobert’s dominance on the offensive glass is almost as significant a factor.
