Bryan Armetta breaks down the biggest risers and fallers for Survivor 50 following Wednesday’s 11th episode, ‘Everyone Will Be Shooketh!’.
The hits keep coming on Survivor 50. This week, two more castaways saw their chances of winning come to an end. Another twist was on tap for Wednesday, this time splitting the merged tribe into two groups. With only one player taking part in both votes (more on that later), things got interesting in a hurry.
First to go was Emily, a chaotic but fun presence that seemed destined for the jury. To close things out, we saw one of the biggest blindsides in recent Survivor history. Ozzy, a five-time returnee, was sent home with an idol in his pocket. Now that another legend has been eliminated, there’s no telling who will emerge victorious this season.
Only seven players are left, with a now-doubled $2 million dollar prize on the line. Who is gaining momentum, and who is losing steam, on Survivor 50?
A lot to unpack for Cirie, who suffered from this week’s double-vote format. Ozzy, her number one ally, was sent home in large part because she wasn’t able to communicate with him. Instead, she was relying solely on Jonathan, the only person able to transverse freely between both groups. Granted, Ozzy blurting out his allegiance to her was a mistake. Assuming how a vote will go down is always foolish, especially for an (unsuccessful) attempt at jury management.
With that being said, Cirie is number one because she still has plenty of potential allies. Rizo and her remain lock-solid, with the former possessing an idol. A budding friendship with Tiffany has also been highlighted over the past few episodes. Besides, Cirie did pull off an impressive move of her own. Rather than pile on Rick with Jonathan and Tiff, she opted to utilize her extra vote advantage on Emily. Since Devens played his idol, it was quite literally a game-saving move. With or without Ozzy, don’t count out one of the greatest to ever do it.
If Cirie was a victim of Wednesday’s twist, Jonathan was a beneficiary. Still, he was no guarantee to end up in this position. It looked like Tiffany had won immunity, prior to a last-second disqualification. To say that changed things up would be an understatement. For the past handful of votes, Jonathan had been pushing hard to get Ozzy out. That failed in spectacular fashion in episode ten, with close ally Stephenie voted out instead. This week, things finally swung in his favor.
Even if you’re not the biggest Jonathan fan, managing to get his desired outcome in both votes was impressive. As previously mentioned, he worked with Cirie and Tiff to get out Emily. While the trio would have preferred Rick, flushing his idol is a solid consolation prize. Later, he was the mastermind behind the most impactful vote of the season. That’s sure to generate a bit of winner buzz for this challenge beast. Racking up a few more immunity wins could help, as well. A quick glance at the jury looks promising; Chrissy, Coach, Ozzy and Steph could all vote in his favor. Still, there’s a long way to go before final tribal council. Jonathan will need to keep his threat level manageable going forward.
The person who played the sloppiest this week, Ozzy, got sent home. I actually don’t want to sound too negative on Joe. However, his path towards winning this game appears slim at best. Still, there’s a real chance the honor-bound player finds himself at final tribal council. The biggest issue here is his ongoing rivalry with Rick, who seems to evade getting voted out every week. However, Devens isn’t exactly in a powerful position without his idol.
Joe’s path towards a victory isn’t impossible, but it would require a complete shift in gameplay. To be fair, he did change things up this week by voting out Ozzy. However, it took plenty of convincing from Rizo. Earning a win, or at least being in contention, means Joe can’t sit next to Cirie or Jonathan at the end. Is he capable, let alone willing, to make some tough decisions down the stretch? Nothing we’ve seen so far suggests that’ll be the case.
