Blake Krass gives his best bet, pick and prediction for Saturday’s FIFA World Cup match between England and Panama.
England needs a win to ensure it wins Group L and get the most favorable matchup in the Round of 32. Meanwhile, this tournament is over for Panama after failing to secure a point in either of its first two matches. However, a result against England would be a great consolation prize. This match takes place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, at 5:00 p.m. ET.
Here are the odds for the match:
Let’s dive into my favorite bet for this match.
It was a great start to the World Cup for England when they defeated Croatia 4-2. Under Gareth Southgate, England had a lot of success in major tournaments, but were often criticized for playing too conservatively. That match made everyone think England’s style had changed under Thomas Tuchel. While they made a couple of sloppy mistakes at the back, they showed their quality going forward and scored four goals against one of the most experienced teams in the tournament. However, their second match against Ghana looked much more like Southgate-ball. England lacked creativity going forward, and several players were ghosts on the pitch for most of the match. England has a chance to win the group with a win over Panama. They should try to crank it up a few gears and put on a strong performance before heading into the knockout stage.
It has been a struggle in this tournament for Panama. They were expected to struggle and were the clear lowest-ranked team in this group. However, not scoring a goal in either of their first two matches has been a real disappointment. Panama has done itself proud defensively, only allowing one goal in each of its first two matches. However, a pair of 1-0 losses has not given the Panamanian fans much to cheer for. They are eliminated from the World Cup with zero points heading into this match. That being said, a strong performance against England could give the fans something to hang their hat on from this World Cup. At the very least, Panama would love to score a goal in this tournament.
My best bet is for England to cover the spread of -1.5 goals, and for Harry Kane to score a goal. In the opening match, England looked dangerous going forward, easily slicing through the Croatian defense. England’s star striker scored a pair of goals, one with his head and one on a penalty. Kane then missed a chance at the end of the match against Ghana that he would score 99 times out of 100. He should get back to his goal-scoring ways in this match against Panama. Panama has nothing to play for and should be more open than it was in its first two matches. Harry Kane can score in so many different ways and should find the back of the net in this match, while England runs away with a comfortable multi-goal victory.
