Best NRFI Bets Today: No Run First Inning MLB Picks For S...
Dan Johnson · 2026-06-28 · via DraftKings Network

Dan Johnson analyzes his three favorite MLB NRFI (no run first inning) prop bets for today’s full slate of ballgames.

Who can suppress all the greatest forces of competitive volatility for six outs? The juicy NRFI—a wager on sequencing, on command showing up immediately, on hitters needing just one more pitch to calibrate. Even this early in the season, the modern game is louder than ever—exit velocity, launch angle, damage on contact. But the first inning still lives in a narrower band, where timing lags just enough behind power to create silence.

With that in mind, here are my top three NRFI picks for Sunday’s full slate of MLB action.

Tigers vs. Astros NRFI (-120)

Astros-Tigers gets the top spot because Hunter Brown brings the best opening-frame weapon on this Sunday board. Brown enters with a 1.40 ERA and 28 strikeouts, and the matchup data backs the surface number. Current Detroit hitters have managed a .196 average, .252 wOBA, .195 xBA, .333 xSLG, and 31.3% strikeout rate against him across 115 plate appearances. Comerica Park also helps, with a 0.95 run factor and a layout that can swallow early contact before it turns expensive.

Jack Flaherty makes the Houston half uncomfortable, but his matchup history keeps this bet alive. Current Astros hitters have a .207 average, .268 wOBA, .199 xBA, .291 xSLG, and 29.7% strikeout rate against him across 91 plate appearances. Houston’s offense can punish mistakes, especially if Yordan Alvarez gets a first-inning swing with traffic. Still, Detroit’s confirmed top four of Kevin McGonigle, Colt Keith, Riley Greene, and Dillon Dingler gives Brown a manageable first assignment. Detroit has scored 0.00 first-inning runs over its last three games, and Houston has also opened cleanly across that same span.

Dodgers vs. Padres NRFI (-115)

Dodgers-Padres carries more sweat, but Petco Park gives this NRFI a strong base. San Diego ranks 29th in MLB at 0.33 first-inning runs per game, and the Padres own an 80.25% NRFI rate. They have also hit the NRFI in 100% of their last three games. Petco’s 89 park factor matters with two right-handed starters, a mild run environment, and a Padres lineup that has not produced enough immediate pressure.

The dangerous half comes against Michael King. The Dodgers can open with Shohei Ohtani, Andy Pages, Freddie Freeman, and Mookie Betts, which makes every NRFI bet feel a little cinematic and ridiculous. King’s matchup file against current Dodgers hitters is not clean either: .244 average, .358 wOBA, .293 xBA, .633 xSLG, and .418 xwOBA across 98 plate appearances. That is the tax. The reason this still grades as a single is San Diego’s side of the inning. Emmet Sheehan brings a 5.32 ERA, but the Padres’ first-inning offense has been one of baseball’s quietest. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado still bring danger, yet the overall first-inning shape favors silence over damage.

Reds vs. Pirates NRFI (+100)

Reds-Pirates is the price play, and it needs to be treated that way. Brady Singer and Mitch Keller do not bring pretty season ERAs, with Singer at 4.81 and Keller at 4.89. The appeal sits in the first-inning texture. Singer has hit the NRFI in 13 of 16 starts, an 81% rate, while Cincinnati owns a 74.07% NRFI rate and a 75.00% road NRFI rate. The Reds also fall from 0.62 first-inning runs per game overall to 0.45 away from home.

Keller has been better against this specific Cincinnati group than his full-season line suggests. Current Reds hitters have a .215 average, .297 wOBA, .229 xBA, .419 xSLG, and .319 xwOBA against him across 166 plate appearances. Cincinnati’s confirmed top four of Elly De La Cruz, Sal Stewart, JJ Bleday, and Eugenio Suárez can damage a mistake, but Keller has at least shown he can avoid getting blitzed by this roster. Pittsburgh is the bigger worry, with 0.65 first-inning runs per game and a stronger home split. Singer’s matchup file allows loud expected damage, but his actual results against current Pirates sit at a .211 average and .300 wOBA.
