Megan Teske breaks down her pick and prediction for Wednesday’s game between the Minnesota Lynx and Washington Mystics.
Two teams will continue their home-and-home when the Washington Mystics and Minnesota Lynx face off for the second straight time on Wednesday night.
Taking a look at the odds on DraftKings Sportsbook, Minnesota is an 8.5-point favorite on the road with -425 odds on the Moneyline. Washington has +330 odds of pulling off the upset for the second consecutive game, with the total set at 169.5 points. Let’s get into my prediction and pick for this Wednesday night matchup between the Mystics and Lynx.
Wednesday night’s matchup will be the second in a row between the Lynx and Mystics and the second of the season between the two teams. Washington picked up the upset in the first game in Minnesota, and now, the Lynx will be looking to bounce back and hand the Mystics a home loss of their own.
Minnesota looked to have control of that first game through most of the game. However, a 12-0 run late in the fourth quarter saw Washington push past the Lynx for the win. The Lynx have been on fire for much of this season, but two of their four losses have now come in their past five games, while they also came close to falling to the Valkyries last Friday as well.
Minnesota has the second-best defense in the league, allowing just 79.6 points a game on 39.4% shooting. However, in those three games, it gave up 86.3 points a game on 45% shooting, highlighted by the late surge from Washington and the 100-point outing from Las Vegas five games ago.
Opposite the Lynx will once again be Washington, which will be looking for its fourth straight win after downing two of the top teams in the Lynx and Liberty in its last two games. The Mystics’ offense has been picking up steam, as it has led them to win four of their last five games.
Washington is one of the worst offensive teams in the WNBA, averaging 82.3 points a game for 11th in the league while its 29% three-point shooting percentage ranks 13th. Despite this, in their win over the Lynx, the Mystics put up 84 points, shooting 37% from three-point range this time.
The Mystics got a big performance from Sonia Citron, who went 6-of-13 from the field for a team-high 21 points, while fellow second year Kiki Iriafen added 17 points to help take the game away from Minnesota. Washington has averaged 86 points a game over its three-game win streak, and those two are a big reason why.
My best bet for this matchup between the Mystics and Lynx is for the Mystics to cover the +8.5-point spread. Washington has been on a roll lately, but all three of its wins have come on the road, and now it returns home, where it is 2-3. Conversely, Minnesota is 7-1 on the road and should be looking for vengeance after falling late on Sunday. However, the Mystics’ offense has still been playing well lately and with some momentum on their side, they should be able to do enough to keep up with the Lynx and cover this spread.
