The Targaryens are back. House of the Dragon Season 3 begins on Sunday, June 21. Following a somewhat underwhelming second season, we’re expecting a ridiculous amount of action this time around in Westeros. Our resident Game of Thrones experts make their House of the Dragon Season 3 predictions below, including who will die and who will claim the throne.
WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD!
Bryan Armetta: A name that could pass away this season is Jacaerys, Rhaenyra’s son. The queen has already seen one of her children, Lucerys, pass back in Season 1. Losing another feels cruel, but that’s the point. Her story revolves around the true cost of power, and whether all the bloodshed is worth it. Jace has seen his responsibility grow, culminating in Rhaenyra revealing “The Song of Ice and Fire” during Season 2. In addition, he’s taken on an important diplomatic role when it comes to winning over other houses. However, the queen has been adamant about keeping him out of harm’s way. In a war such as this one (that’s about to get way bloodier), there’s only so long that can continue. In a universe that has always reveled in shocking deaths, the prince’s downfall would take plenty of viewers by surprise.
Jeff Pratt: If you’re familiar with Dance of the Dragons lore, you know that a big name is likely to meet his end in the Battle of the Gullet during the Season 3 premiere. Notoriously the bloodiest battle in Westeros’ history, it is expected that Jacaerys Targaryen will die. This would come to a shock for many viewers, as Jace emerged as an up-and-coming player in the story during Season 2, but killing characters off unexpectedly is what Game of Thrones does best. Outside of Jace, we’re almost certainly due for at least one or two more big deaths this season, and I expect those characters to be Criston Cole and/or Otto Hightower. Cole’s would come as more of a shock to fans, but you can only serve in the battlefield for so long before the tides turn against you… if you know, you know.
Bryan Armetta: While Rhaenyra might suffer a heavy emotional cost, she has the edge heading into Season 3. The Greens are hanging on by a thread, carried almost entirely by the presence of Aemond and his massive dragon Vhagar. Outside of those two, their firepower and leadership is scattered. King Aegon II is broken, both physically and mentally. Otto Hightower has been captured on his way back to King’s Landing. The queen has stronger support and more dragons at her disposal. Add it all up, and a retaking of King’s Landing could be imminent.
Jeff Pratt: All signs are pointing towards Rhaenyra retaking King’s Landing early in the season. While she will officially claim the throne, Team Green and Team Black will remain firmly entrenched in a tight power struggle.
Bryan Armetta: It’s a predictable pick, but the answer is Daemon. Last season was a roller coaster for the Prince, the most experienced warrior at the Blacks’ disposal. After taking Harrenhal and going through some powerful visions, it appears his commitment to Rhaenyra is stronger than ever. Still, we have yet to see the vicious Targaryen in a major battle during this war. A clash with rival Aemond feels more like a matter of when, not if. After a Season 2 that saw more sitting around and plotting than it did action, Daemon should take on a much larger role in The Dance of the Dragons.
Jeff Pratt: Daemon was the star of Season 1, and after being sidelined for virtually all of the action in Season 2 he should return to the fold in a huge way. Daemon’s ever-ambiguous motivations and interests make his every move fascinating. He’s expected to lead the charge for Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne on the battlefield and in the air, but how exactly he does so will be must-see television. Another character to keep an eye on will be Aegon, who carried large parts of Season 2 for me and will now undergo a massive evolution as the disfigured, former king hellbent on revenge against his own brother.
Bryan Armetta: Rhaenyra’s recruitment efforts at the end of Season 2 could be the biggest wildcard going forward. The dragonseeds (aka new dragon riders) give the Blacks plenty of added ammunition in the fight to retake the Iron Throne. With that being said, treachery runs rampant in the world of Westeros. Can the queen fully trust these new riders, now wielding the most powerful weapons on Earth? Will the Greens manage to cling onto power despite being out-gunned? Stay tuned…
Jeff Pratt: Alicent Hightower’s mental decline begins… and develops quickly. In Season 2, Alicent quickly lost control of her two sons, resulting in the Dance of Dragons spiraling into a fully fledged bloodbath. As she grapples with the consequences of her actions and further irrelevance, Alicent’s mental state will drastically decline. There’s a chance she ends this season with no real strings left to pull, instead serving as a mere (traumatized) witness to the death and destruction.
