Atlanta Braves vs. Washington Nationals prediction, pick ...
Dan Johnson · 2026-05-25 · via DraftKings Network

Dan Johnson takes you through his preview, prediction, and best bet for today’s baseball game between the Atlanta Braves and the Washington Nationals.

TThe Nationals and Braves close the weekend at Truist Park with a rubber game that has already been through two completely different scripts. Atlanta, 36-17, stole Friday’s opener 5-4 in 11 innings behind Chadwick Tromp’s walk-off single, then Washington, 26-27, answered Saturday with a 2-0 one-hitter built by Jake Irvin, Brad Lord and Richard Lovelady. The Braves managed only Michael Harris II’s seventh-inning single Saturday, struck out 10 times against Irvin before he exited, and watched Dylan Crews and Jorbit Vivas supply Washington’s offense with solo homers. Atlanta has still handled these spots better than almost anyone in baseball, winning seven of eight rubber games and carrying an 8-0-0 home-series record into another Sunday decider. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Atlanta Braves and the Washington Nationals.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Braves vs. Nationals prediction, preview

The left-on-left pitching matchup looks cleaner for Atlanta in the first five than it does across the full nine. Foster Griffin enters 5-2 with a 4.02 ERA and 54 strikeouts, but the recent and underlying profile has started to fray: 14 runs allowed over his last 9.1 innings, two homers allowed in each of his last two starts and 10 HR allowed in 10 starts overall. His Statcast line adds the louder warning: 4.33 xERA, .329 xwOBA, .437 xSLG allowed, 12.4% barrel rate, 37.3% hard-hit rate, 88.1 mph average exit velocity and a 14.2-degree average launch angle. Martín Pérez has given Atlanta steadier run prevention at 2-2 with a 2.85 ERA and 38 strikeouts, though his own contact indicators—.310 xwOBA, 89.3 mph average exit velocity, 40.9% hard-hit rate and 7.3% barrel rate allowed—keep Washington live enough to make the Braves’ full-game moneyline too expensive.

Atlanta’s lineup gives the early team total enough impact even without a perfect right-handed stack. Acuña leading off matters because the first-five bet is built on plate-appearance volume, and his underlying contact still plays: 90.0 mph average exit velocity, 44.1% hard-hit rate, 11.7% barrel rate and .374 xwOBA. Olson is the loudest contact bat in the order, carrying a 93.3 mph average exit velocity, 51.7% hard-hit rate, 16.1% barrel rate, .385 wOBA and .381 xwOBA, which keeps him central even in a left-left matchup because Griffin’s issue has been barrels and lift more than simple platoon leakage. Albies gives the middle of the order a switch-hitting bridge after Atlanta has already produced 21 HR, 39 doubles, 62 extra-base hits and 88 RBI in 698 plate appearances vs. left-handed pitching, while Riley lengthens the first two trips with a right-handed damage profile of 90.8 mph average exit velocity, 46.0% hard-hit rate and 10.2% barrel rate. Harris adds speed and contact behind that first wave, and his lone hit Saturday at least kept him from entering the rubber game completely cold after Atlanta’s one-hit shutout.

Nationals vs. Braves pick, best bet

Washington’s bats are the reason this is an Atlanta scoring bet rather than a Braves side bet. The Nationals have hit .263/.350/.424 with a .773 OPS vs. left-handed pitching, with 15 HR, 51 extra-base hits, 64 walks and 219 total bases in 591 plate appearances, and Wood gives the top of the order a terrifying contact-quality outlier: 96.2 mph average exit velocity, 59.1% hard-hit rate, 25.2% barrel rate, .391 wOBA and .421 xwOBA. Abrams already has 10 HR and enough pull-side speed/power to turn Pérez’s contact regression into immediate trouble, while Crews just returned from Triple-A and homered Saturday, giving Washington another right-handed swing with pedigree in the middle of the order. Vivas also went deep Saturday, García gives the lineup another left-handed bat-to-ball piece behind Wood, and Ruiz keeps the bottom from becoming a pure strikeout pocket. That depth makes a full-game Braves run line shaky, but it does not change the cleanest early edge: Griffin has allowed 10 HR in 10 starts, and Atlanta’s first two turns through the order carry enough contact quality to reach three runs by the fifth.

The board makes the derivative the best expression. Braves ML -163 asks too much for a game with a live Washington offense, and the full-game Braves team total over 4.5 at -105 brings delay risk into the late innings with thunderstorms in the forecast and RotoWire showing 77% rain, 79 degrees and 5 mph wind right-to-left. The full-game over 8.5 at -105 fits both teams’ lefty-split profiles, but a stop-start weather game can wreck rhythm, starter length and bullpen order. Braves F5 team total over 2.5 at +110 keeps the focus where the edge is sharpest: Atlanta’s first two trips through the order against Griffin, who is allowing too many barrels, too much lift and too many homers for a lineup this top-heavy.

Best bet: Braves F5 team total over 2.5 +110. Playable to +100. Atlanta was flat Saturday, but this is a matchup correction rather than a pure bounce-back chase: Griffin’s last two starts, HR rate, barrel rate and xSLG allowed all point toward early scoring pressure, and the Braves can get there with one Olson/Riley swing plus traffic from Acuña, Albies and Harris. The failure path is Griffin landing enough cutters and sweepers early to steal the first trip through the order while storms create a choppy pace. The price is strong enough to ride the early Atlanta damage before the game gets messier.

First five projection: Braves 3, Nationals 2.

Final score: Braves 6, Nationals 4.

Best bet: Braves FT TT o2.5 (+110) vs. Nationals
