After being saved by Netflix, Pop Culture Jeopardy is back for Season 2. Sam Connon breaks down everything you need to know ahead of the four-week event hosted by SNL’s Colin Jost.
Pop Culture Jeopardy! took the game show world by storm in late 2024 when the spinoff premiered on Amazon Prime Video. However, the streaming service opted not to pick the show back up for a second season. Netflix ultimately swooped in, reviving it with a new format after a 14-month hiatus.
If you are looking to play along and test your knowledge, here is everything you need to know before Pop Culture Jeopardy! Season 2 premieres:
Pop Culture Jeopardy Season 2 Episode 1 will premiere on Netflix on Monday, May 11 at 3 a.m. ET. It is expected to have a runtime around 25 minutes.
Netflix is branding Season 2 as a four-week event. One new episode will air every weekday – just like the main Jeopardy! show – through the finale on June 5. This will be the first time that Netflix has ever utilized a daily, Monday through Friday drop schedule over multiple weeks.
(Warning: Spoilers for Pop Culture Jeopardy! Season 1 ahead.)
Saturday Night Live writer and cast member Colin Jost has returned to Pop Culture Jeopardy! Season 1 after serving as host in Season 1. Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings isn’t expected to show up, even though his show also films on the Alex Trebek Stage at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California. An animated version of Jennings popped up at the end of the trailer for the season, which might double as the show’s new introduction now that it’s streaming on a new platform.
As for the contestants themselves, the show has undergone a slight format change for Season 2. Instead of three teams made up of three players each going head-to-head-to-head, Season 2 will feature three two-person teams per episode. Whichever team wins any given will stay alive and move forward in the tournament, up until a champion is crowned in the finale. “Personality Hires” – made up of Emily Hogg, Zach Gozlan, and Miranda Onnen – won Season 1 and took home the $300K grand prize.
Among the new teams include “Cheaper By the Cousin,” “AMC B-Listers” and “Only Howards in the Building.” It remains to be seen what the prize will be this time around, given the smaller team sizes.
As the title suggests, Pop Culture Jeopardy! is a more approachable version of Jeopardy! to those who consider the main show to be too difficult or stuffy. Gone are the categories about hard science and ancient history, replaced by questions that relate to music, film, television, social media trends, viral videos and more.
Season 1 introduced a new twist to the gameplay in the form of a Triple Play, when any player can buzz in and provide one of three possible correct responses. If correct, their two other teammates would each have to provide the next two correct responses that apply. Since the teams are made up of two players instead of three this season, the twist could disappear or turn into a Double Play.
