Cincinnati Reds vs. San Francisco Giants prediction, pick...
Dan Johnson · 2026-04-16 · via DraftKings Network

Dan Johnson takes you through his preview, prediction, and best bet for today’s baseball game between the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants.

Cincinnati walks into this one at 10-7 with a lineup that can create damage in a single swing, while San Francisco, sitting at 6-11, is still searching for sustained offense to balance its mediocre pitching staff. The Reds are making a an early push in the NL Central, and it’s because of their top-to-bottom balance. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Reds vs. Giants prediction, preview

Over the last five games, the Reds have scored 25 runs—5.0 per game—with multiple games of six-plus, while San Francisco has managed just 11 runs across its last four—2.75 per game. But this is not just form—it’s about who they’re facing. Tyler Mahle has a 4.30 ERA and 1.57 WHIP through three starts, and his profile is being carried by a four-seam fastball he throws 50.9% of the time that has been crushed for a .400 average, .700 slugging, and .514 wOBA. Cincinnati’s team-level contact lines up directly with that weakness: 10.2% barrel rate, 41.3% hard-hit rate, and a 16.9-degree launch angle, a combination built to lift and damage elevated velocity. San Francisco, by contrast, is facing Rhett Lowder, whose mix is more balanced and contact-managed, and their own offensive shape—8.1% barrels, 35.9% hard-hit, 88.0 mph EV—leans far more on sequencing than impact. Same total on the board, completely different paths to scoring.

The top of the Reds order is exactly the kind of group that punishes Mahle’s current pitch shape, not just generic pitching. Elly De La Cruz is hitting .284/.360/.552 with five homers and five steals, pairing lift with pressure once he reaches. Sal Stewart is at .310/.431/.638 with five homers and eleven RBI, carrying a barrel rate over twenty percent, which is exactly the profile that turns a damaged four-seam into instant runs. Matt McLain still brings pull-side lift with an 8.7% barrel rate, and even with Spencer Steer (.185/.224/.407) and TJ Friedl (.153/.286/.153) scuffling, this lineup doesn’t need sustained rallies against Mahle—it needs one inning where the fastball leaks. That’s the separation from the other side: Lowder has allowed just one home run in three starts and spreads usage across four pitches, which gives San Francisco fewer clean damage windows. Cincinnati is the offense facing the more attackable primary pitch, and that’s where this game tilts early.

Giants vs. Reds pick, best bet

Cincinnati’s offense still owns a .208 team batting average and has been volatile inning-to-inning, while Mahle can still miss bats when the splitter is working, carrying a 30.6% whiff rate on that pitch. If he sequences correctly and avoids fastball damage, this can stay quiet early. Lowder has also limited home run damage, which raises the possibility that this turns into a tighter, lower-scoring first five than the park might suggest.

But that case depends on Mahle solving the one issue that has consistently shown up. He is still leaning heavily on a four-seam that is getting hit with authority, and Cincinnati’s contact profile is built to capitalize on elevated mistakes more than San Francisco’s is. The Reds’ 10.2% barrel rate compared to the Giants’ 8.1%, paired with their higher launch angle, means their damage comes faster and in fewer swings. In this environment, that difference is enough to tilt the early scoring expectation toward one side without needing a full-game script to cooperate.

Reds F5 team total over 2.5 (+105) is the play. This is a bet on Cincinnati converting one mistake in the air into a multi-run inning against a fastball that historically doesn’t always hold up. Cincinnati’s recent scoring form, combined with the park and the pitch-level mismatch, creates a path where one crooked inning clears the number. The failure mode is straightforward—Mahle leans on the splitter, limits barrels, and the Reds strand traffic—but the price accounts for that volatility.

Best bet: Reds F5 TT o2.5 (+105) vs. Giants
