San Diego Padres vs. Chicago Cubs prediction, pick for ML...
Dan Johnson · 2026-04-28 · via DraftKings Network

Dan Johnson takes you through his preview, prediction, and best bet for today’s baseball game between the San Diego Padres and the Chicago Cubs.

Cubs–Padres at Petco Park settles into that late-West-Coast window where the game tends to take its shape early and then hold it. Chicago comes in at 17-10 riding a deeper, more stable offensive identity, while San Diego sits at 14-13 still trying to smooth out its rhythm after a volatile Mexico City series. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the San Diego Padres and the Chicago Cubs.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Padres vs. Cubs prediction, preview

Matthew Boyd’s surface line is the first thing to correct. The ERA sits at 5.79, but the indicators underneath are far cleaner: 3.71 xERA, 1.56 FIP, 1.86 xFIP, 33.9% K-BB rate, 41.9% ground-ball rate, 0.64 HR/9. That’s a profile built to regress positively, especially against a Padres lineup hitting just .230 with a .618 OPS vs left-handed pitching, ranking 28th in MLB in that split. Randy Vásquez is the inverse case. His 1.88 ERA and 1.08 WHIP look sharp, but the contact quality is much louder—.329 xwOBA, 41.9% hard-hit rate, 13.5% barrel rate—and that’s a dangerous mix against a Cubs offense posting a .250 AVG, .339 OBP, .406 SLG, and .745 OPS vs righties, with strong walk volume (77 BB) and enough lift to punish mistakes.

Chicago’s lineup gives that regression angle multiple paths. Seiya Suzuki has been one of the hottest hitters in the league, carrying a .414 OBP, .220 ISO, and 165 wRC+, while Nico Hoerner is setting the table at .307/.382/.474, 142 wRC+. Michael Busch has added left-handed lift with a recent .333/.394/.600 stretch, and Ian Happ continues to supply power with seven home runs on the season. The depth matters just as much—Dansby Swanson, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and the catching group keep traffic moving, which is exactly how you expose a pitcher allowing a 13.5% barrel rate. San Diego has star power, but the matchup fit is thinner. Manny Machado is producing (.289 AVG, .444 OBP, .811 OPS, four HR, 16 RBI), and Miguel Andújar has been one of the more consistent bats (.316 AVG, .789 OPS), but the rest of the group has been uneven in this split: Fernando Tatis Jr. at .250/.327, Xander Bogaerts at .278/.350/.333 vs LHP, and limited power output across the lower half.

Cubs vs. Padres pick, best bet

If we start to find out that Boyd’s ERA is the real indicator—not the underlying metrics—then the Padres’ right-handed core can string together early damage. There’s enough contact skill at the top—Tatis, Machado, Bogaerts—to imagine pressure innings if Boyd misses spots. But the underlying data pushes back on that script. Boyd’s strikeout-to-walk profile and ground-ball lean reduce big-inning risk, and San Diego’s lack of consistent lift against lefties forces them into multi-hit scoring sequences rather than quick damage. On the other side, Vásquez’s profile doesn’t allow for many mistakes—when hitters square him up, they do real damage, and Chicago has enough depth to keep that pressure constant.

The game also tilts on the bullpen and context layer. San Diego just burned through its relief group in Mexico City, blowing a 7-2 lead while allowing 10 runs across the seventh and eighth innings, with key arms like Morejón (51 pitches over 3.0 innings), Marinaccio (54 over 2.1), and Peralta (33 over 2.1) carrying recent workload. Chicago’s bullpen has been steadier overall at a 3.76 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, which matters in a lower-scoring Petco environment where late innings often decide the margin. With the park suppressing easy offense and both starters likely to keep things competitive, the cleaner late-game profile becomes the separator.

Best bet: Cubs ML (+100). The way it dies is Boyd’s surface struggles carrying over while San Diego’s top order strings together early contact before his command settles, but the underlying pitching indicators, split mismatch, and bullpen edge still point to Chicago as the more complete nine-inning side.

Projected score: Cubs 4, Padres 3.

Best bet: Cubs (+100) at Padres
