Tate was the second option to Jeremiah Smith in each of the past two seasons, but is still going to be a high-end first-round draft pick. That shows how great these Ohio State receivers have been.

Tate has been a reliable receiving option for three seasons at Ohio State. He has sure hands, is a great route runner and almost seems like a sure thing to be a good NFL receiver. The biggest flaw with Tate as a prospect is his size and athleticism. He lacks the build, strength and flat-line speed to be a top-tier NFL WR1.

When will Carnell Tate get drafted?

Carnell Tate is now expected to be drafted eighth or later in the 2026 NFL Draft. Tate has long been expected to be the first wide receiver taken in the draft. However, Jordyn Tyson is coming up on his heels to be the first wide receiver off the board.

Tate is still the favorite, but Tyson is closing in on him. The former Arizona State receiver seems like the high-end option, while Tate is the safer option. The way Tate has consistently produced over his time at Ohio State, his football IQ, and his sure hands make him a very safe pick. It’s hard to imagine him not having a long, successful NFL career. However, due to his size and speed, there is also seemingly a ceiling on how great Tate could be at the next level. Tyson has some red flags about his reliability, but has the characteristics required to be one of the best receivers in the league if he meets his potential.

Which team will draft Carnell Tate?

Several teams in the wide receiver market are drafting inside the top 10. Tate could go as early as the Tennessee Titans at No. 4. If Tennessee wants to get a pass-catcher for their No. 1 overall pick last year, Cam Ward, Tate could be the pick. The Giants, Browns, Commanders, Saints and Chiefs are also in the mix to take a receiver.

My best bet is for Carnell Tate to be a top-seven pick. While Tyson’s stock is rising, Tate is going to make an offensive coach and quarterback duo very happy. There is a chance that Tate gets to stay in Ohio and become a Cleveland Brown. He could also go to Washington and play alongside fellow Buckeye Terry McLaurin. That Ohio State duo could be what Jayden Daniels needs to get back to the postseason after a disappointing sophomore season.
