Julian Edlow breaks down an NBA Draft prop bet on Labaron Philon.
Philon is an intriguing prospect, and would go much higher any other year in the draft. But this class happens to be loaded, and beyond the franchise players at the top of the draft, the guard position gets very cluttered very quickly. Keaton Wagler, Mikel Brown, Darius Acuff, Kingston Flemings and Brayden Burries could all easily be selected with picks No. 5 through No. 10. All of them are similar sized guards to Philon, just ranked as better prospects.
Once we get out of the top-10, if any of those names were to slip, they would be the guard teams were looking to move up to select. Other names like Cameron Carr and Christian Anderson are generally ahead of Philon in mock drafts, and could go in the early to mid-teens in this draft. You also have Bennett Stirtz, who is picking up steam as the draft approaches, and has an identical draft prop to Philon set at 17.5.
NBA Draft dot net still has Philon slotted at No. 15 to the Bulls in their mock draft, but you’ll struggle to find another outlet that had Philon going in the top-17 picks on Tuesday night. You’re starting to see major outlets like ESPN even project Philon to drop into the mid-20’s in the draft. While many teams will be happy to grab him there, it seems like this strong class is causing Philon to slip, if anything, just due to the amount of strong prospects ahead of him.
While I like the player, the way this draft should shake out, there are far more routes to Philon sliding past this number.
