Sean Barnard breaks down his top player prop picks for Saturday’s NBA playoff matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics.
The two best words in sports have arrived- Game 7. The Philadelphia 76ers will travel to Boston to face the Celtics in what is the most common Game 7 matchup in NBA playoff history. Boston leaped out to a 3-1 series lead, but Joel Embiid’s return has significantly altered the outlook, and the Sixers have won back-to-back games in impressive fashion, giving themselves a chance.
Looking at the odds for Game 7, the Celtics enter as 7.5-point favorites and hold -230 odds of winning outright on DraftKings Sportsbook. The Sixers hold +190 odds of winning outright with the game total set at 204.5 points.
You can check out a full preview and prediction for the matchup on DraftKings Network. But for now, let’s dive into the top player prop bets for Game 7.
The Philadelphia 76ers handed Paul George a max contract in the 2024 offseason for moments like tonight. It has been a turbulent two seasons in Philadelphia, well beyond what George is responsible for. But he is playing his best basketball at the right time, and the Sixers will look to him often in the must-win matchup tonight.
Across his 37 regular-season games, George posted averages of 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists, while shooting 39.2% from beyond the three-point arc. Since the postseason kicked off, the nine-time All-Star is averaging 18.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists. George is shooting an NBA-best 54.3% from beyond the three-point arc across the postseason while attempting 5.8 perimeter shots per game. Across the six games thus far, he has shot 1-for-2, 2-for-5, 4-for-7, 3-for-3, 4-for-9 and 5-for-9 in the series.
The Celtics have built a clear identity by launching more three-pointers than their opponents and playing the math game, which has played out in their favor. Philadelphia has made it a priority to limit these looks and match this volume on the other end of the floor. George carries a big portion of this responsibility, as he led the team in three-point percentage across the regular season. He enters this matchup having launched nine three-pointers in back-to-back games and has made over 2.5 three-pointers in four straight games. Expect the Sixers to make it a priority to create perimeter looks for George and for the six-time All-NBA team member to knock down at least three three-pointers for the fourth straight game.
It has been an impressive season for Jaylen Brown, who has stepped up during the absence of Jayson Tatum during the bulk of the regular season. This is especially the case with Tatum being added to the injury report today, as he is listed as questionable with left knee soreness. Tatum left the Game 6 loss and was seen visibly working through pain on the sideline and during timeouts. It is Game 7 of the playoffs, so one would think that if he can play, he will. However, Tatum returned from last year’s Achilles tear at just about record time to even get on the floor this season. There are some additional circumstances that must be kept in mind as the Celtics make the official decision on his status ahead of tip-off.
With or without Tatum, count on Jaylen Brown to lead the scoring charge just as he has all season. The five-time All-Star averaged 28.7 points per game across the regular season and scored over 26.5 points in 46 of his 71 games played. Since the playoffs started, Brown is averaging 24.5 points per game and has been held to under 26.5 points in five of the six games. He tallied 36 points in Game 2, but he has otherwise failed to reach this margin.
With the season on the line, count on the Celtics leaning on what got them here and for Brown to lead the offensive charge. Philadelphia has made it a clear priority to limit three-point looks and stop helping off of shooters. Boston’s best other route to scoring is by allowing Brown to get downhill and attack the basket. It may not come in the most efficient fashion, but expect the 2023-24 Finals MVP to do everything in his power to put forth a strong scoring total and eclipse the 26.5 line with the season on the line.
This entire series flipped following the return of Joel Embiid. While injuries have caught up to the former MVP, he still has a case for being the best player on every single floor he steps on when he is physically right. This has shown to be the case in this series, especially given the Celtics’ lack of interior defenders. None of Neemias Queta, Nikola Vucevic nor Luka Garza is capable of providing any sort of resistance to Embiid when he gets the ball in the post.
However, this has resulted in the Celtics needing to throw double teams at the Sixers star. Embiid has struggled with this at times in his playoff career, but he has grown as a playmaker in recent years. Through the first three games he has played in this series, Embiid is averaging 7.3 assists per game and has produced assist totals of six, eight and eight.
The clear puzzle the Sixers will throw at the Celtics is by getting Embiid the ball in the post at a frequent rate and daring them to defend him as they choose. If they allow the Celtics’ big men to remain in one-on-one coverage, he will comfortably coast to 30+ points and lead the scoring charge. But expect it to be more likely that Boston forces the ball out of Embiid’s hands to make others beat it. The Sixers have capable three-point shooters who are getting excellent looks off of Embiid’s gravity and playmaking out of the post. Expect this to remain a theme and for the seven-time All-Star to tally at least six assists for the fourth straight game.
