Charlie Cummings previews Wednesday’s MLB matchup between the Los Angeles Angels and the Cleveland Guardians and provides his best pick.
This series feels like a microcosm of the American League this season. Only four teams in the AL are above .500, with the Cleveland Guardians among them. And despite having some good moments, the Los Angeles Angels are tied for the worst record in the American League at 16-27. Yet the talent gap between these two doesn’t feel very large, and it has made for an entertaining series.
First pitch is set for 1:10 p.m. ET. The Guardians are -143 moneyline favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook, while an Angels upset is priced at +119. The game total is set at O/U seven runs.
Let’s get into a pick and prediction for this Angels-Guardians game.
First things first, let’s get to know these starting pitchers.
Reid Detmers steps to the mound for the Angels on Wednesday. The former 10th overall pick had a rough start on the mound and was moved to the bullpen last year, where he did quite well. Now the Angels are giving him another spin on the bump. The basic numbers don’t look great (4.33 ERA and 1.24 WHIP), but if you look under the hood, things are a bit more promising.
When Detmers was a starter, he was a great strikeout arm, but he gave up too many walks and too much hard contact. Opposing hitters barreled him 10.7% of the time, and his average exit velocity was 89.9 MPH. This season, the barrel rate is down to 5.8%, and the average exit velocity has dipped to 88.2 MPH. Those sound like fine margins because they are; any dip in hard-hit rates while maintaining his strikeout rates spells massive improvement. No wonder Baseball Savant has charted him with a 2.91 expected ERA.
Opposite him will be Parker Messick, another promising young lefty. Messick impressed as a rookie in 2025, recording a 2.72 ERA across seven starts. He has followed that up with even better starts, pitching to a 2.30 ERA across 47 innings. It’s not luck; Messick is posting strong metrics when it comes to inducing soft contact and generating swings-and-misses. With a strong walk rate to boot, he has the look of a fixture in this Guardians rotation. His arsenal is quite interesting, and who better to break down his offerings than Messick himself?
Both lineups have similar strengths and weaknesses. They feature big stars in Mike Trout and Jose Ramirez, but lack depth down the lineup, leading to meh results. There’s a mix of speed and power here, but a lack of consistent results have held both lineups back. That certainly bodes well for these starting pitchers.
Now that we know these teams a bit better, who is going to take this one home?
The total is low for a reason. A pair of below-average lineups facing starters that are throwing it well adds up to a low-scoring affair. LA’s bullpen leaves much to be desired, but the Guardians can sure bring it. I believe Detmers will do his best here, but Messick will shred this mediocre Angels lineup before handing things off to a stellar pen.
