Sean Barnard gives his top DraftKings MLB Pick6 plays and projections for Monday’s 14-game slate.
There are 14 games of MLB action taking place across tonight’s MLB slate. Teams are roughly 25% through the schedule, with the standings beginning to separate and the identity of each roster becoming clearer. The action will start tonight with four games starting at 6:40 p.m. ET, and will conclude with a triple-header of games with a 9:40 p.m. ET start time.
There are plenty of ways to get in on the action on DraftKings. One of the more unique ways to play this year is with Pick6 Fantasy Baseball!
Let’s take a look at my top Pick6 plays for Monday’s action. You simply choose whether each set statistic will be more or less than the set number. With the stage set, here are my top picks on today’s MLB slate.
There have been high expectations for Andrew Painter since he was drafted with the 13th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. The Phillies allowed Ranger Suarez to walk out of the organization to help pave an opportunity for the rookie. But Painter is going through some expected growing pains and has not inspired complete confidence in the way he has looked on the mound. Across his first eight games and 37.2 innings pitched, Painter is posting a 6.21 ERA and 1.593 WHIP.
Painter will be facing a Reds team that ranks 15th in the MLB in runs this season and has tallied the fourth-most home runs. The rookie is coming off an encouraging start in which he held the Red Sox to one earned run across 5.0 innings pitched. But he allowed eight earned runs in the start before this, more than 2.5 earned runs in four consecutive starts, and more than 2.5 earned runs in five of his eight games pitched. He has not escaped a start without allowing an earned run yet. Painter has also allowed seven home runs already this season, which is a concern against this home-run-dependent Reds’ lineup. Cincinnati has tallied more than 2.5 earned runs in six straight games entering this matchup, and count on the Phillies’ rookie to get tagged for some early damage at home tonight.

There is no hitter in baseball smashing home runs at the rate of Kyle Schwarber right now. After leading the National League with 56 home runs last year and leading the MLB with 132 RBIs, he is on an even greater tear. Schwarber has tallied an MLB-best 20 home runs through his first 47 games played. This includes putting one over the fence in seven of his last 10 games played, with multiple home runs in two of these matchups.
Nick Lodolo will be taking the mound for the Reds today in the series opener. Lodolo enters with an 8.68 ERA on the season, with three home runs allowed in 9.1 innings pitched. Schwarber has one home run notched off the Reds’ starter in 12 at-bats in his career. The Phillies’ slugger is in an absolute rhythm at the plate, and this is a matchup he has had success in. Back this to continue as the Phillies return him for the first time following a six-game road trip.
While he still has not lived up to the sky-high standards of his massive contract, there are some encouraging strides from Juan Soto. On the season overall, he is slashing .281/.376/.491 with six home runs and 21 strikeouts. But he has been extremely strong against right-handed pitching, as Soto is hitting .333 with a 1.021 OPS. Five of his six home runs have come against right-handed pitching.
Jake Irvin will get the start as the Nationals open up their series with the Mets tonight. Irvin has struggled with home runs, including giving up an MLB-worst 38 home runs last year, and has given up six home runs in nine starts this season en route to his 5.91 ERA. He has especially struggled against left-handed hitters with a 51.3% hard-hit rate and 17.4% barrel rate allowed. Soto has hit Irvin well, going 3-for-9 against them in his career, with a home run, five walks, a double, and a 1.349 OPS. If Irvin is chased early, Washington’s bullpen has its own struggles, which include a collective 4.78 ERA and allowing 32 home runs. Soto looks to be heating up, and this is a matchup that plays to his favor. It would not surprise me at all if Soto puts one over the fence tonight, but I am backing him to record more than 0.5 RBIs tonight.
The New York Yankees will open up a series against the Toronto Blue Jays tonight. Ryan Weathers will take the ball for New York, entering with a 3.00 ERA, a 1.111 WHIP, and 54 strikeouts across 45.0 innings pitched. Weathers is averaging 6.8 strikeouts per game through his first eight starts and is posting a career-high 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings. He has tallied more than 5.5 strikeouts in five of his right starts overall.
Toronto has generally done a good job of avoiding strikeouts this year. They are posting the lowest strikeout rate in the league at 18.1%, but it is slightly higher against left-handed pitching. The Blue Jays have tallied 10+ strikeouts in seven games this season and more than 5.5 in 32 of their 46 games. Weathers is coming off a nine-strikeout performance in his previous start. I am trusting Weathers’ stuff to carry over and for the 26-year-old to tally more than 5.5 strikeouts tonight.
The Chicago Cubs will open up a series against the Milwaukee Brewers tonight. Brandon Sproat will take the mound for Milwaukee, entering with a 5.75 ERA with eight home runs and 20 walks allowed in 36.0 innings pitched. Sproat has given up three or more earned runs in three of his last four starts and five starts overall.
Ian Happ is slashing .228/.368/.455 this season with 10 HRs and 20 RBIs. He has hit better at home this season, batting .271 with a .600 slugging percentage at Wrigley Field, compared to a .183 batting average and .305 slugging percentage when playing away. Happ feels like a strong candidate for a home run tonight, but I am opting to be a bit safer and backing the Cubs outfielder to add to his 20 RBI total in this favorable match-up.
Also in line to benefit from the matchup with Brandon Sproat and the Brewers, look for Michael Busch to tally more than 1.5 total bases. Sproat is allowing a 42.2% hard-hit rate to lefties this season, while Busch is producing a 13.5% barrel rate against right-handers this season.
On the year overall, Busch is slashing .232/.355/.369 with 39 hits and 62 total bases across 46 games played. He possesses the most raw power of any member of the Cubs from the left side of the plate and is coming off a home run yesterday against the White Sox. Back Busch to carry this momentum over to tonight and take advantage of the favorable matchup by tallying more than 1.5 total bases tonight.
