Alex Hunter breaks down his preview, prediction and pick for Sunday’s WNBA matchup between the Sky and Aces.
The Sky are hosting the Aces on Sunday. On DraftKings Sportsbook, Las Vegas is favored by 7.5 points and this game carries a total of 181.5 points.
Let’s get into my pick and prediction for this contest.
After losing six in a row, the Sky just swept a mini series vs. the Fire, winning these two games by 23 and 30 points. Chicago had six and seven players reach double-figures in the victories and in the second win, Kamilla Cardoso and rookie Sydney Taylor put on a show.
Cardoso went off for a career-high 30 points while going a perfect 13-of-13 from the field and Taylor scored 29 points on 8-of-11 shooting. The Fire do rank dead last in net rating this season, but seeing this 6-12 Chicago team dominate in back-to-back games was encouraging to see, nonetheless.
The Sky still rank just ninth in net rating this season and things become much more challenging Sunday with the defending champion Aces in town, but Chicago should be riding high right now and the club could put up a better fight than expected.
Las Vegas is 13-5 and ranks fifth in net rating. The Aces are coming off a 15-point win over the much-improved Wings and Las Vegas has won three of its last four. A’ja Wilson is having another incredible season, leading the WNBA with 25.5 PPG on 52% shooting and she is a -265 favorite on DraftKings Sportsbook to win her fifth MVP award.
Wilson’s sidekick, Jackie Young, has also been strong after a rough start to the season, scoring 19+ in four straight. The Aces rank first in offensive rating and they are unstoppable on that side of the ball when clicking. Las Vegas is an outstanding 8-2 on the road and this Chicago defense that ranks ninth in rating is likely to have major issues trying to slow down the Aces.
The Sky’s back-to-back wins over the Fire were notable, but Portland is a bad team and Chicago should come back down to reality vs. this Aces team that has been awesome on the road.
Las Vegas should win this game, but rather than backing the team to cover -7.5, I prefer to back this game for over 181.5 points. The Sky are 11-7 for the over this season and they have been much better on offense with Taylor starting, ranking second in offensive rating since she joined the first unit. Combine this with the Aces’ league-best offense and this game has the makings of a shootout.
