Charlie Cummings previews Wednesday’s WNBA matchup between the Dallas Wings and the Chicago Sky and provides his best pick.
Last year, the Dallas Wings and the Chicago Sky were two of the worst teams in the WNBA. Big changes came in the offseason, leaving many to wonder where both teams would be heading in this 2026 season. So far, so good; both the Wings and the Sky are both .500 and above, producing some surprising results. Which of these teams will keep up their momentum?
Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. ET. The Wings are 2.5-point road favorites with -142 moneyline odds on DraftKings Sportsbook. A Sky upset is priced at +120. The game total is set at O/U 170.5 points.
Let’s get into a pick and prediction for this Wings-Sky game.
It has been a rollercoaster four games for the Dallas Wings. A dramatic opening night win over the Indiana Fever brought the good feelings, but it’s clear not all is hunky-dory in the D. New head coach Jose Fernandez does not mince words, and if he’s unhappy with his players, he’s going to let everyone know.
Big steps have been taken. The offense is humming, and their offseason additions have raised the team’s defensive floor. Paige Bueckers continues to look like a 1A scoring option, No. 1 pick Azzi Fudd is playing well off the bench, and they continue to get strong minutes out of Odyssey Sims. But if Fernandez is right, the team has a long way to go as a unit before it can be a serious contender.
The Sky made the biggest headlines this offseason when they traded Angel Reese to the Atlanta Dream. Losing one of the best defenders in the game was going to hurt. That makes it all the more surprising that this revamped Sky squad leads the league in defensive rating. Go figure.
But the cracks are showing, and it’s not entirely in the Sky’s control. Finding consistent offense has been a struggle, but Rickea Jackson was a godsend coming over from the Los Angeles Sparks. The good feelings did not last long; Jackson went down in their last game with a torn ACL, and will miss the remainder of the season. Back to square one.
The hope for this team going forward is that they can maintain a level of defense to keep them competitive, and that they can generate enough offense out of the Skylar Diggins-Kamilla Cardoso pick-and-roll to sustain things. It’s a tough formula, but at the very least, this team has shown some spirit.
Now we have a good idea what to expect from these teams. Who is going to come out the winner?
It’s tough to know what to expect from either of these teams. Dallas has been a source of drama off the court, but they’re producing good results; their only losses have been close Ls to better teams. Yet the strange vibes are difficult to ignore. Meanwhile, the Sky will have to rally without their best scorer, which won’t be easy. So what do we make of this matchup?
The gap between these two teams will become apparent soon enough. Dallas is deeper, has the high-end star talent, and has a clear identity through their offense. Chicago’s defense may end up better than expected, but they’re not going to stay in the inner circle for long. Count on a convincing road win for the Wings to get above .500.
