Dan Johnson gets you set for the series finale of Hacks, as Deborah and Ava take one last bow, marking the end of one of HBO Max’s sharpest comedies.
Tomorrow night, Hacks takes its final bow. The Season 5 finale—and the series finale—drops Thursday, May 28 at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO Max, closing the book on Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels after five seasons of insults, betrayals, hotel rooms, apology tours, late-night humiliations, Vegas grandeur and the strange, bruising intimacy of two people who became indispensable to each other almost against their will.
More on the final episode below.
Episode 9 gave Deborah the impossible image she has been chasing all season: Madison Square Garden, sold out, the room finally bending back toward her. “The Garden” let her stand inside the myth she built for herself, but the hour also understood how expensive that kind of triumph can be. Ava has spent the season trying to keep one hand on her own future while the other keeps getting pulled back toward Deborah. Jimmy’s career has been dented by loyalty, lawsuits and the cost of protecting the machine. Deborah, meanwhile, has been moving through all of this with a body that keeps reminding her it is not another venue she can simply command.
That is the emotional charge of the finale. The applause has arrived. The comeback worked. Now Hacks has to answer the harder question: what remains when the room empties, the bit is over, and Deborah and Ava are left with the private shape of what they have made together?
The episodes drop on Thursday, May 28 at 9:00 p.m. ET, streaming on HBO Max.
Season 5 has 10 episodes total, and it’s the final season of the series. HBO Max is sticking with a weekly rollout, letting the tension between Deborah and Ava stretch out instead of getting burned through in a binge.
The core cast is back: Jean Smart as Deborah Vance and Hannah Einbinder as Ava Daniels, alongside Paul W. Downs, Megan Stalter, and Carl Clemons-Hopkins. Season 5 also adds new faces, including Christopher Briney as a pop star who enters Deborah’s orbit, plus appearances from Tony Goldwyn and Kaitlin Olson.
