Braxton Ashcraft, Pittsburgh Pirates at San Francisco Giants ($7,700) — Ashcraft averages 97 mph with the fastball and is posting a 27.3% strikeout rate through 41.2 innings. The walk rate is elevated at 8.5% but the 3.02 ERA is supported by the 2.99 FIP. The barrel rate is only 6.7% and he’s put up double-digit FPTS in six of seven starts, with three of those over 20 FPTS. San Francisco is 28th in ISO and dead-last in both wOBA and wRC+.
Edward Cabrera, Chicago Cubs at Texas Rangers ($7,400) — Cabrera has allowed exactly three earned runs in each of the last five starts. The average exit velocity is 91.7 mph while the barrel rate is 12.6%. The walk rate is 8.2% while the K-BB% isn’t great at 13.5%. The 4.01 FIP is also higher than the 3.27 ERA. That said, he’s put up double-digit FPTS in six of seven starts, with two over 20 FPTS. Texas is seventh in strikeout rate, 23rd in ISO, 24th in wOBA and 22nd in wRC+.
Moises Ballesteros, Chicago Cubs at Texas Rangers ($4,400) — Ballesteros has six home runs in 105 plate appearances. The walk rate is 9.5%, strikeout rate is only 16.2%, ISO is .247 and the slash is .280/.343/.527. The average exit velocity is 90.2 mph while the barrel rate is 14.1%. Against right-handed pitching, the wRC+ is 145 while the ISO is .253. All six home runs have come against righties. Jack Leiter has a 5.04 FIP and 12.9% K-BB% against lefties while four of the seven home runs allowed have come off the bat of a lefty.
Gavin Sheets, St. Louis Cardinals at San Diego Padres ($2,900) — Sheets is only slashing .228/.271/.465, but the ISO is .238 while the strikeout rate is 21.5%. He has five home runs and three stolen bases in 107 plate appearances. He’s been batting fourth or sixth in the order, and against right-handed pitching, the wRC+ is 119 while the ISO is .261. All five home runs have come against righties. Dustin May has had issues with lefties this season, as all three home runs have come off the bat of a lefty with a slash line of .370/.433/.543. The FIP is 5.05 while the K-BB% is only 4.8%.
Randy Arozarena, Seattle Mariners at Chicago White Sox ($4,000) — Arozarena has three home runs and eight stolen bases in 158 plate appearances. The ISO is only .147, but he’s a career .182 ISO batter. Against left-handed pitching, the ISO is .216 while the wRC+ is 131. Anthony Kay has struggled this season with a 6.41 FIP and 3.5% K-BB%. The average exit velocity is 91.1 mph, the launch angle is 14.1 degrees and the barrel rate is 12.6%. Righties are slashing .347/.434/.632 and have hit all six home runs off Kay. His FIP is 7.88 while the K-BB% is -3.5%.
Carson Benge, New York Mets at Arizona Diamondbacks ($2,800) — The surface stats don’t look good for Benge, as the slash is only .208/.276/.330 while the ISO is .123. He does have three home runs and six stolen bases in 116 plate appearances, though. The barrel rate is only 5.0% but the average exit velocity is 90.7 mph. Over the last four games, he’s produced 3, 16, 16 and 15 FPTS. Merrill Kelly has really struggled to start this season, posting an 8.14 FIP, -1.0% K-BB% and serving up six home runs in only 19 innings. The walk rate is a whopping 15.3%, average exit velocity is 91.2 mph and barrel rate is 18.8%. Lefties are slashing .396/.500/.875 with five of the six home runs coming off their bats. The FIP is 11.17 while the K-BB% is -6.9%. Kelly is not this bad, but we pick on him until he forces us not to.
