Keagan Smith gives you a preview, prediction and pick for today’s game between the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers on Tuesday’s MLB slate.
The AL Central race has two teams out in front, one of which is the Cleveland Guardians. After winning seven of their last 10, they’re hot at the moment and coming off some very strong offensive performances, one of which was an 8-2 win over the division rival Detroit Tigers last night. As the latter continues to slump at 2-8 over their own last 10 games, the home team will need to dig deep to break this cold stretch and turn their fortunes around as this series continues.
Here’s a betting prediction and pick for Tuesday’s Guardians vs. Tigers matchup courtesy of MLB odds and lines on DraftKings Sportsbook.
The Guardians were in something of a slump during early May, but they’ve since begun to heat up with three straight wins and seven in their last 10 games. At 27-22, they’re atop the AL Central with a slim lead, but they’re also the only team in the division with a positive run differential (+12). Their offense has taken strides lately and is up to 4.45 runs per game, also producing 8.33 over the last three outings. On the season, Cleveland ranks 12th in OPS at .709 with a slash line of .233/.329/.381. A .147 ISO is also around the league average, as are the 51 home runs, but the plate process is where the Guardians truly stand out — their 0.59 BB/K ratio leads the Majors behind top-three marks in BB% (11.6%) and K% (19.7%). Looking at the team’s pitching numbers, a 3.82 staff ERA ranks 10th with a 1.27 WHIP and the fifth-best K-BB% at 15.5%. They’re also sixth in LOB% (75.5%). In narrowing down the stats to just relievers as well, the Guardians’ numbers sit at a 3.96 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with an even better K-BB% of 16.6%, which falls second in the MLB.
Second-year standout LHP Parker Messick starts for Cleveland today. He brings a 5-1 record through nine starts with an excellent 2.35 ERA and 0.99 WHIP, also punching out 58 hitters in 53.2 IP. He keeps exit velocity way down and has been dealing well in terms of chase and whiff rate.
Looking at the Tigers, they’ve fallen short of expectations so far this season at just 20-28. Having lost three straight games as well as eight of their last 10, the need to break this cold spell is only growing along with the division deficit, which puts them 6.5 games shy of Cleveland for first. Granted, injuries are playing a role in this drop since Kerry Carpenter and Gleyber Torres are both still out due to injury along with Tarik Skubal and Will Vest. The bats are struggling more than anticipated, producing just 3.96 runs per game despite a .700 OPS. The full slash line reads .238/.320/.379 with a .141 ISO and only 42 home runs. The Tigers also have an 0.44 BB/K ratio. As for the pitching staff, the team holds a 4.03 ERA that ranks 13th along with a 1.30 WHIP and 12.5% K-BB%. Their performance with runners on base has been an issue at 23rd in LOB% (70.0%). Looking specifically at the bullpen, Detroit’s ERA comes in at 3.95 with a 1.37 WHIP and 11.2% K-BB%.
The Tigers trot out RHP Keider Montero, who has a 2-3 record over his eight starts in 2026. His 3.65 ERA and 0.99 WHIP are quite good, but he’s struck out only 31 hitters in 44.1 IP and there’s some concern in his underlying metrics — he’s allowed plenty of hard contact and a 10.5% barrel rate.
DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Guardians as -167 Moneyline favorites on the road tonight. The Tigers come in at +138 odds to win outright. The run total also sits at only eight combined runs between these sides.
Cleveland finds itself in prime position for a multi-run win tonight. The Guardians won by five yesterday and have an offense that’s clicking nicely with a .733 OPS over the last two weeks and an .850 mark over the last seven days alone. They’re hitting really well, but they should get plenty of support from Messick, too. The young hurler has allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven of his nine starts this season with a WHIP below 1.00 in every single one of his appearances. He’s yet to face the Tigers this year, but it’s not like they’re much competition at the moment. Detroit has an OPS of .613 over the last week, fourth worst, and sits dead last at .608 over the last 14 days. That lineup is in no form to post many runs today, which makes me feel confident in Cleveland covering the run line here.
