Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres prediction, pick for Monday 5/18/26
Griffin Wong · 2026-05-19 · via DraftKings Network

Griffin Wong gives you a preview, prediction and pick for tonight’s game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres.

The 2026 MLB season is only 47 games old, so it’s too early to be talking about division title races. However, while some divisions appear to be wide-open and others have clear favorites, the NL West looks to be down to just two. The Los Angeles Dodgers currently lead the way at 29-18, while the San Diego Padres are just half a game back at 28-18.

The teams will face off for the first time this season when their three-game set at Petco Park begins with tonight’s 9:40 p.m. ET first pitch.

For the series opener, Yoshinobu Yamamoto will crest the hill for Los Angeles, while Michael King earned the call for San Diego.

Let’s break down this matchup with some odds and lines at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres prediction, preview

After a short rough stretch, the Dodgers have gotten themselves back on track with five straight wins, though they were the beneficiaries of an easy schedule, facing the AL’s cellar-dwelling Los Angeles Angels. In particular, Los Angeles’ offense has been on fire as of late, scoring 25 runs in its last two games, and it has once again reclaimed the league’s top slot in OPS. Additionally, both the Dodgers’ bullpen and their rotation have top-five ERA’s this season, a drastic improvement from last season, when they finished 21st in relief ERA. Scarily enough for the rest of the league, Los Angeles’ rotation could get even better once Blake Snell returns from his latest injury and Yamamoto starts pitching up to the form he displayed last fall, and its offense could improve with Mookie Betts starting to find his groove at the plate. All in all, the Dodgers’ run differential suggests that they should be a 33-14 team, which would put them on pace for the best record of their dynastic era. As is, Los Angeles is on track for a 100-win season.

The Padres have stagnated, going just 9-9 over their last 18 games, but they, too, have some momentum, as they’re coming off of a sweep against the Seattle Mariners. San Diego has thrived mostly through its relieving corps, as its bullpen ranks eighth in the league in ERA, and closer Mason Miller has been lights-out, posting a 0.86 ERA and a negative-0.24 FIP across 21.0 innings of work. Other signs are less positive, though; the Padres rank eighth-to-last in rotation ERA, with three different starters (including former Dodgers ace Walker Buehler) sporting ERA’s north of 5. The offense also ranks third-to-last in OPS, thanks in large part to Fernando Tatis Jr., who’s stunningly one of just five qualified hitters without a home run this season. San Diego’s run differential suggests that some regression is inevitable; their Pythagorean win-loss record is just 24-22.

If Yamamoto pitches up to the standard that he’s capable of, Los Angeles should have the starting pitching advantage. However, the 2025 World Series MVP has had a rough couple of starts; after opening his season with a 2.10 ERA through four starts, he’s given up at least three earned runs in each of his last four outings, the worst stretch of his young career. The advanced stats back up some of his struggles; he ranks in just the 48th percentile in expected ERA and the 35th in expected batting average, and his propensity to give up barrels is more in line with his performances during his rookie season than his sophomore campaign in 2025. Unfortunately for Yamamoto, the Padres have laced the ball despite their mediocre overall performance, ranking 10th in barrel rate and third in hard hit rate. Yamamoto could rack up a lot of strikeouts, given that they’re reasonably indisciplined and whiff a lot, but it won’t be as easy a matchup as the raw numbers suggest. He should still be able to limit the damage somewhat, especially on the road, where he has a 2.25 ERA in his career.

Even if he pitches well, he isn’t a guarantee to out-duel King. King has been a solidly above-average pitcher for most of the past five seasons, posting a sub-three ERA in four of them. Now in his third season as a full-time starter, the 31-year-old has given up one or fewer earned runs in four of his last six starts. Advanced numbers back up his strong basic statistical profile: he ranks in the 92nd percentile in pitching run value this season, and he’s done an excellent job limiting hard hits, allowing an 82nd-percentile average exit velocity and an 86th-percentile hard hit rate. The Dodgers aren’t a perfect matchup for him, since he also has a high barrel rate and they rank fifth in that stat, and they should be able to draw a lot of walks because he doesn’t do a good job incentivizing chases, but his ability to produce grounders should be a major asset against one of the league’s most fly ball-reliant teams. Unfortunately for him, the splits aren’t in his favor, since Los Angeles has been better on the road this season, but he’s been pretty effective regardless of venue.

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres pick, best bet

Best Bet: Los Angeles Dodgers Race to 3 Runs (-130)

I’ll believe that Yamamoto will give up three or more earned runs for a fifth straight start when I see it, but I believe too much in his pedigree and in the Dodgers’ fielders to ever back a streak like that from him. I’m not positive that Los Angeles will be able to get three runs off of King, but it has been tremendous with runners in scoring position, and King’s struggles with walks could give the Dodgers more chances in such favorable alignments.

Strong Lean: Yoshinobu Yamamoto 7+ Strikeouts (-121)

Yamamoto has still done a great job striking batters out even during his recent rough patch, posting two consecutive eight-strikeout games and recording at least seven in four of his last five starts. He should be able to work through San Diego’s lineup more quickly than usual, given its aggressive plate approach, which should keep him in the game long enough to reach that threshold.
