Alex Hunter details some of his favorite long shot outright winner bets for the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.
We head to Shinnecock Hills (par 70, 7,440 yards, Bentgrass/POA mixed greens) in Southampton, New York, for the U.S. Open. Shinnecock last hosted the U.S. Open in 2018, when Brooks Koepka (+1) came out on top. This week features a 156-man field competing for a $20 million purse. There will be a top-60 and ties cut after the first two rounds.
Below, I have featured two of my favorite outright long shot bets to win the U.S. Open on DraftKings Sportsbook.
After a rough patch earlier this year, Smith decided to make a change, leaving swing coach Grant Field to work with Claude Harmon. Smith made this move right before the PGA Championship and the change paid dividends at the major, as Smith finished T7th at the difficult Aronimink GC. Like Shinnecock, Aronimink is a par 70 located in the Northeast.
For the week, Smith ranked fifth in SG APP and 17th in SGP. He shot under par in 3-of-4 rounds, including a pair of 2-under 68s to conclude the major. Following the PGA Championship, Smith finished T16th and T5th in his next two starts on the LIV Golf tour. Smith leads the circuit in putting average this season and his terrific putting should be a big edge at Shinnecock, as this par 70 presents huge and complex greens. When Koepka won here in 2018, he finished the event third in SGP.
Smith missed the cut that week, but he has made 6-of-10 cuts and finished inside the top-five twice at the U.S. Open. Wind is going to be a big factor at Shinnecock this week, but as a former Open champion, Smith is no stranger to winning in windy conditions. The 32-year-old contending this week isn’t a far fetched idea and Smith is worth taking a chance on at these long +12000 odds.
Fox finished a respectable T41st at Shinnecock in 2018 as the 124th ranked player in the world. Since then, the professional out of New Zealand has won four times on the DP World TOUR and twice on the PGA TOUR. Those PGA TOUR victories came just last season and Fox is currently the 55th player in the world as he travels back to Shinnecock.
Fox has made the cut at the last three U.S. Opens, including a T19 at Oakmont last season. After dealing with kidney stones in the spring, his game is trending up. Fox has made six straight cuts, and in his last three starts, he has finished T35th, T27th and T8th.
That T8 came at TPC Toronto last week and outside of around the greens, Fox gained strokes in every major category. The 39-year-old has shot under par in all but one of his last eight rounds and he ranks 15th in par four performance this season, which bodes well for a par 70 like Shinnecock. When this venue hosted the U.S. Open in 2018, eight of the top-11 finishers ranked top-10 in par four performance for the major.
