Logan Webb simply hasn’t recovered from his disastrous Opening Day start. Against the Yankees, he allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits through five innings. Since then, he’s allowed at least three runs in three of his next four starts, giving him a 5.40 ERA with an xERA of 4.42. He’s giving up a ton of hard contact as well with a 51.6% hard-hit rate, which is currently a career-high.
Of course, going up against the Dodgers is no easy task. Webb, as he did last season, is struggling against lefties. Thus far, they’ve tagged him for a .365 wOBA with a 4.36 FIP and both of the home runs he’s allowed. The Dodgers will likely have at least six hitters hitting lefty in this matchup. The Dodgers are also excellent against sinkers, which is Webb’s main pitch. Today’s expected lineup, dating back to last year, has a combined .384 wOBA and a .215 ISO against that pitch.
The Padres are in a great spot against the Rockies at Coors Field. Ryan Feltner is taking the mound for the Rockies and comes with a 6.00 ERA, a 7.02 xERA, and a 6.37 FIP. I’m taking Machado to record 3+ H/R/RBI hitting in the heart of the Padres lineup. Ramon Laureano, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Jackson Merrill should all be hitting in front of him, likely giving him plenty of opportunities to hit this mark. Feltner throws a four-seam fastball and a slider almost equally as his main pitch. Dating back to last year, Machado has a .339 wOBA against the four-seam and a .344 wOBA against the slider. The Padres’ team total is set at 5.5 runs at -130, so the offense should be rolling this afternoon.
This bet is saying that Cavalli won’t go at least five innings this afternoon against the Braves. That may seem like a low bar, but Cavalli has gone under five innings in four of his five starts. He logged six innings against the Phillies in his second start of the year, but has gone no more than 4.2 innings in his other starts. Cavalli’s erratic command is a big part of the issue, as he sports a 5.4 BB/9. Lefties are also the sore spot for Cavalli thus far, as they’ve tagged him for a .422 wOBA and have scored nine of the 13 runs he’s allowed. The Braves should be fairly heavy with lefties this afternoon. I think this will be a short afternoon for the Nationals starter.
