Keagan Smith gives you a preview, prediction and pick for today’s game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday’s MLB slate.
After a red-hot start to the season, the Milwaukee Brewers have cooled off considerably in recent weeks. However, they just hung 13 runs on an Arizona Diamondbacks group with a winning record last night, perhaps recapturing some much-needed momentum after slipping down the division standings. Will Wednesday’s game be a more competitive matchup in game two of this series?
Here’s a betting prediction and pick for today’s Diamondbacks vs. Brewers matchup courtesy of MLB odds and lines on DraftKings Sportsbook.
The D-Backs are fighting to stay above the .500 mark amidst a bit of a slump in recent weeks. They’ve dropped five of their last seven games since April 19, but hope is far from lost. They’re scoring 4.79 runs per game and have the eighth-best OPS on a .250/.308/.417 slash line. While the OBP could be better and is dragged down by the second-lowest BB% at 7.3%, there are good things to write about the bats. The Diamondbacks have a .166 ISO even despite hitting just 27 homers, ranking fifth in doubles (54) and first in triples (10). Those extra bases and the second-highest speed score as a team have been the key to success. The pitching staff has its fair share of issues, though. Arizona’s ERA as a group sits 28th in the MLB at 4.97, underperforming a still-rough FIP of 4.68. The .137 WHIP is fine, but the Diamondbacks are third-to-last in K% at just 19.1% as well as HR/9 at 1.38.
The Brew Crew looked quite good in the first couple weeks of the season but haven’t performed up to par ever since. They’ve lost five of their last eight amidst injury absences for Christian Yelich and Andrew Vaughn, also missing a couple of relievers. They are still scoring 5.18 runs per game this year and 7.00 per game over their last three, but the latter total is propped up quite a bit by that 13-run outing yesterday. Milwaukee’s OPS of .691 ranks 23rd on a .238/.335/.356 slash line, and a .118 ISO remains second worst in the MLB. The Brewers have only 20 home runs on the campaign, though their 36 stolen bases lead the sport and they have the third-best speed score to play small ball and make up for the lack of long balls. If nothing else, an 0.58 BB/K ratio also paces all teams. Their arms are quite good overall, coming in at eighth in ERA (3.75) and 12th in WHIP (1.28). Plus, they’re ninth in K-BB% at 14.6%.
Arizona starts LHP Eduardo Rodriguez tonight. He’s been quite solid at first glance through five starts, amassing a 2.89 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. However, he generates few strikeouts with just 18 in 28.0 IP and is overperforming an xERA of 4.94 by a wide margin.
Second-year RHP Brandon Sproat starts for Milwaukee. He has a 6.45 ERA and 1.57 WHIP through five appearances this season, three of which were starts. He’s also struck out 20 hitters in 22.1 IP, bringing higher-end fastball velocity but also walking a few more hitters than you’d like to see at a 13.7% BB%.
DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Brewers as -137 Moneyline favorites at home tonight. The Diamondbacks come in at +114 odds to win outright. The run total also sits at 8.5 combined runs between these sides.
We’re targeting under 14.5 total strikeouts in this matchup tonight as our best bet for a couple of reasons. First off, Milwaukee has the fifth-lowest K% (20.9%) at the dish while Arizona sits ninth lowest (21.2%), so that’s an encouraging sign for the under in itself. However, Rodriguez has a 14th-percentile K% (15.0%) himself while his team’s bullpen falls all the way to 25th in the stat at 20.5%. Between the Brewers’ great plate process and the Diamondbacks’ lack of strikeout upside, that really boosts the outlook on this line. Those factors all add up to a bullish projection on under 14.5 strikeouts between these sides.
