Cam Schlittler, New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles, $10,000 — Schlittler has been one of the best pitchers in all of MLB to start the season. The strikeout rate is 31.4% while the walk rate is a minuscule 3.8%. He’s allowed only one home run in 41.2 innings while the 1.54 FIP supports the 1.51 ERA. The BABIP is a little low at .240. The average exit velocity is 87.1 mph while the barrel rate is 6.9%. He’s put up double-digit FPTS in every start this season with five over 20 and three over 30 FPTS. Now he gets to face a Baltimore team that is fourth in strikeouts.
Edward Cabrera, Chicago Cubs vs. Cincinnati Reds, $7,700 — There are many red flags regarding Cabrera that should make us pause before clicking the button. The 20.1% strikeout rate is a career-low while the 3.72 FIP is higher than the 3.06 ERA. The average exit velocity of 91.5 mph is a career-high while the 11.8% barrel rate is only the second time above 10%. Cincinnati is also fifth in ISO. That said, Cabrera has only allowed three home runs in 35.1 innings while the Reds are third in strikeouts, 24th in wOBA and 25th in wRC+.
Vinnie Pasquantino, Kansas City Royals vs. Cleveland Guardians, $4,100 — The hopes were high for Pasquantino entering this season, as Kansas City moved the fences in and Pasquantino broke out last season with 32 home runs, 113 RBI and a .211 ISO. The tracks for the positivity train have been sloped upwards, though, while the tunnel looks to have blotted out all light. Pasquantino is slashing only .179/.278/.348 with four home runs in 133 plate appearances. The ISO is .170. But, but, but….the BABIP is only .190 and the ISO is .218 against right-handed pitching. He’s going to get hot. It’s just a matter of when. Tanner Bibee is allowing a 91.7 mph average exit velocity and all five home runs have come off the bat of lefties. The FIP is 5.99 against lefties compared to only 2.4 against righties.
Kyle Karros, Colorado Rockies vs. New York Mets, $3,100 — Karros has a middling .064 ISO in 115 plate appearances. He’s also been batting towards the bottom of the lineup. Against left-handed pitching, though, the wRC+ is 103 while the slash is .310/.394/.345. The ISO is only .034 and I usually hate these kind of players for fantasy, but this game is in Coors and Karros has put up at least 3 FPTS in six of the last seven games with four of those at least 7 FPTS. Lefty David Peterson isn’t as bad as the 6.53 ERA indicates, as the FIP is 3.68 while the BABIP is an elevated .371. That said, his control hasn’t been great and the K-BB% is only 8.2% against righties.
Fernando Tatis Jr., San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants, $4,900 — Tatis has zero home runs and a .050 ISO through 139 plate appearances! The average exit velocity is a robust 93.2 mph while the barrel rate is 13.2%. The launch angle is only 3.2 degrees, though, while the pull rate is a career-low 27.5%. This is not the New World Order. At least I don’t think it is. I’m going to side with the long history that Tatis has established and chalk all this up to small sample size. At least, the wRC+ is 116 against left-handed pitching while the ISO is .190. Lefty Carson Whisenhunt will be making his first MLB start of the season. Last season, he made five starts in the majors and got lit up for a 6.91 FIP while the average exit velocity was 92.4 mph. He struggled against righties with a -5.7% K-BB% and 9.14 FIP.
Luke Raley, Seattle Mariners vs. Atlanta Braves, $3,400 — Raley does two things well – strikeout and hit bombs against right-handed pitching. The strikeout rate is 37.5% while the ISO is .236. The average exit velocity is 92.9 mph, the launch angle is 17 degrees and the barrel rate is 18.9%. All five home runs have come against righties and the wRC+ is 122 against them. JR Ritchie has a 5.99 FIP through 12.1 innings and all three home runs have come off the bat of lefties. The K-BB% is 7.7% while the FIP is 7.53 against lefties.
