Breaking down Wednesday’s WNBA matchup between the Chicago Sky and New York Liberty, including a best bet on DraftKings Sportsbook.
The Liberty are one of the hottest teams in the league right now, while the Sky are still trying to find answers after losing Rickea Jackson earlier this season. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m. ET, with New York listed as a 9.5-point favorite and the total sitting at 169.5 on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Let’s get into it!
New York has won seven straight games, and while the offense gets most of the attention, the defense has been the real story lately. The Liberty rank second in defensive rating and have allowed a league-best 76.1 points per game over their last seven contests. That’s championship-level defense, and it’s a big reason they’re tied with Las Vegas and Minnesota as title favorites.
The offense is starting to come around, too. Breanna Stewart looks like herself again, averaging 22.0 points and 9.8 rebounds over her last five games while recording back-to-back double-doubles. Sabrina Ionescu is also back in the lineup after missing most of the season, and even if she’s still working back into form, her return raises the ceiling of this offense considerably. Add in Jonquel Jones, who has six blocks over her last three games, and it’s easy to see why New York looks like one of the league’s most complete teams.
Chicago deserves credit for continuing to compete despite everything that’s gone wrong. The Sky pushed Indiana to overtime last week and continue to play hard, but the offense has struggled since Jackson’s injury. Chicago ranks 13th in offensive rating and is averaging just 83.0 points per game over its last three contests. Skylar Diggins continues to carry much of the offensive burden, but scoring depth remains a major issue.
Kamilla Cardoso has been one of the few consistent bright spots. The 6-foot-7 center is averaging 8.6 rebounds and has recorded 14 blocks over her last five games. She gives Chicago a legitimate interior presence and one matchup area where the Sky can compete. The problem is that one strong matchup advantage doesn’t solve the bigger issue. New York is currently defending better than almost the entire league, and Chicago hasn’t shown enough offensive consistency to make that challenge any easier.
Chicago continues to compete, but New York is playing at a different level right now. With the Liberty defending this well and getting healthier offensively, the matchup feels tilted too heavily in their favor.
