Rick and Morty has never had any shortage of whacky, raunchy storylines, and the latest season has been no different. Sam Connon breaks down everything you need to know before Season 9 Episode 4 of the animated sci-fi series premieres on Adult Swim, then streams on HBO Max and Hulu.
As we march towards the midpoint of Rick and Morty Season 9, the show has refused to stray away from its classic raunchy humor and niche sci-fi concepts. Adult Swim has lost a few fan favorites over the years, but this series remains the network’s flagship property. And now, streaming audiences can tune in, as well.
Whether you are watching week-to-week or preparing to catch up, here is everything you need to know before Rick and Morty Season 9 Episode 4 premieres:
Rick and Morty Season 9 Episode 4 will premiere on Adult Swim at 11 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 14. The episode, which is titled A Ricker Runs Through It, will have a runtime around 22 minutes. It will be available to stream on HBO Max or Hulu on Monday, June 15, as will the three episodes that came before it.
As was the case with the past seven seasons, Season 9 will be 10 episodes long. It will run through the finale on Sunday, July 26.
(Warning: Spoilers for Rick and Morty Season 9 Episode 3 ahead.)
Rick and Morty has had a pretty stable cast over the years, barring Adult Swim cutting ties with co-creator and lead voice actor Justin Roiland in 2023. The two titular roles are now filled by separate people, as they were in Seasons 7 and 8. Here is a look at the recurring cast, as well as who they are playing:
Dan Harmon, Kari Wahlgren and Tom Kenny have made various appearances as multiple characters over the years, and will probably pop up in Season 9 as well. Keith David’s President Curtis, who is getting his own spinoff show that starts in July, could also return. While The Office veterans Ed Helms, Oscar Nuñez and Amy Ryan – plus comedian Rob Riggle – voiced characters in Episode 2, they probably won’t be back to reprise those roles. Keegan-Michael Key and Tilda Swinton are among the other celebrities who have showed up this season.
There wasn’t much in terms of overarching plot development in Episode 3, but that is par for the course for Rick and Morty. We already got a healthy dose of lore in the season premiere, followed by some textbook loneliness and existential dread in Episode 2. This past week, we got a more traditional format with an A and B plot. Rick and Morty fought a magical martial artist who they met in a Trader Joe’s parking lot while Jerry’s attempt to fix his pool-cleaning robot went sideways fast.
Based on the lookahead for Season 9 Episode 4, we may finally get answers about Rick’s signature flask. After Beth claiming that it surely can’t hold that much liquid, Rick decides it’s time to visit the pocket dimension where his beverage originates from. The episode’s synopsis is as follows:
“Passwords are tough to remember, especially with special characters.”
Rick and Morty Season 9 Episode 4 will premiere at 11 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 14. The next six episodes will come out once per week at the same time.
Rick and Morty will air on the Adult Swim cable channel. Episodes will be available the next day on HBO Max and Hulu starting Monday, June 15.
Adult Swim renewed Rick and Morty for Season 10 back in 2023, then through Season 12 in 2024. That will take the show through at least 2029, per Variety. There is also a President Curtis spinoff show slated to come out later in July 2026.
