Keagan Smith gives you a preview, prediction and pick for today’s game between the Athletics and Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday’s MLB slate.
The mess in the AL West continues without a single team above .500 in the division. Tonight, the Athletics square off against the Los Angeles Angels again in Anaheim for the third outing of a four-game set. The Halos took the opener 2-1 before the A’s rallied with a 14-6 win last night, but what till tonight’s matchup hold in store?
Here’s a betting prediction and pick for Wednesday’s Athletics vs. Angels matchup courtesy of MLB odds and lines on DraftKings Sportsbook.
The A’s are the closest thing the AL West has to a good team in terms of record, sitting 24-24 at the top of the division. Their run differential sits at -6, and they’ve dropped six of their last 10 games, though. This team thrives on offense and produces 4.48 runs per game with a .732 OPS. The full slash line reads .252/.328/.404 with an ISO of .152, tallying 53 home runs on the campaign. The Athletics are also at an 0.43 BB/K ratio and have improved on their K%, so that’s a positive as well. However, the pitching staff leaves something to be desired with an ERA of 4.38 and a 1.44 WHIP. A 9.7% K-BB% is also near the bottom of the MLB, and the bullpen numbers don’t look any better — the relievers have a 4.65 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and a 10.5% K-BB%.
The A’s are starting RHP Aaron Civale tonight, who is 5-1 over his nine starts in 2026. He has an excellent ERA of 2.70 despite a 1.39 WHIP, striking out 35 batters in 46.2 IP. Outside of his 6.9% BB% and a 60th-percentile barrel rate though, many of his underlying numbers are rather poor.
At the bottom of the division are the Angels at 17-32, also dropping eight of their last 10 contests. The key stat to take note of? Their -67 run differential is the worst in the sport. The offense averages only 3.96 runs per game with an OPS of .686 that falls 25th overall. Los Angeles’ slash line comes in at .225/.313/.373, though a .148 ISO is respectable alongside 54 homers. There are clear issues with the plate approach though, bringing an 0.37 BB/K rate with the MLB’s worst K% at 25.7%. The Angels’ arms are among the bottom of the statistical leaderboard as well, producing a paltry 5.04 ERA and 1.46 WHIP with a 9.9% K-BB%. Narrowing it down to the relief arms, the same numbers read 5.63, 1.55 and 9.0%.
For the Angels, RHP Jack Kochanowicz takes the mound after going 2-3 in nine starts. He has a 4.56 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 34 strikeouts across 51.1 IP. He’s generated a 95th-percentile ground ball rate, but has a 14th-percentile xERA as well.
DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Athletics as -125 Moneyline favorites on the road tonight. The Angels come in with +104 odds to win outright. The run total also sits at 9.5 combined runs between these sides.
It feels odd to say it, but the A’s are one of the better offenses in baseball this season. Nick Kurtz and Shea Langeliers both have an OPS above .900 and there are plenty of other contributors making a difference in the team’s turnaround. They’re still not a genuinely good team due to the pitching issues, but they’re fun and scrappy. That’s enough to put forth a quality effort against the Angels, whose arms are among the worst in the league aside from Jose Soriano. Kochanowicz’s numbers in average exit velocity and hard-hit rate are both below the 30th percentile, and while he’s a great at keeping balls low, that hasn’t kept his ERA down this year. I like the A’s to smash again tonight, especially against the bullpen.
