Dan Johnson · 2026-05-23 · via DraftKings Network

Dan Johnson takes you through his preview, prediction, and best bet for today’s baseball game between the Athletics and the San Diego Padres.

The Athletics come into San Diego at 26-24, with enough lineup damage to make the plus-money side of this matchup more interesting than the logos suggest. The Padres are 29-20, still right in the NL West race and dangerous at Petco because their bullpen can turn a one-run lead into a six-out squeeze. The starting matchup puts Jeffrey Springs against Walker Buehler, and that is where the game tilts away from a standard home-favorite read. San Diego has the better late-inning structure, but Oakland has the better offensive split for the starting matchup and the stronger case to create the first true scoring stress. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Athletics and the San Diego Padres.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Athletics vs. Padres prediction, preview

Jeffrey Springs gets the ball for the A’s at 3-4, 3.93 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 47 strikeouts and 55.0 innings; Walker Buehler counters at 3-2, 5.01 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 37 strikeouts and 41.1 innings. Springs gives Oakland a viable run-prevention base against a Padres lineup that has been one of baseball’s weakest groups against left-handed pitching. San Diego is hitting .216 with a .586 OPS vs. LHP, ranking 30th in MLB in OPS in that split. Machado has been the Padres’ best qualified hitter against lefties at .929 OPS and .310 average in 34 PA, but Castellanos sits at .408 OPS and .167 average in 25 PA, and Tatis is only 6-for-28 against lefties this season. The broader San Diego offense has been shaky too: a recent team snapshot had the Padres at .224 average, .296 OBP, .371 SLG and .667 OPS, with Machado, Tatis and Merrill combining for .164/.231/.249 over an 18-game stretch. Sheets has been the exception, carrying nine HR, 10 doubles and 21 RBI, but the matchup still gives Springs a cleaner early profile than the Padres’ side price suggests.

Buehler is the pitcher under more pressure. His season line already sits at 5.01 ERA and 1.35 WHIP, and his Statcast profile shows why Oakland’s scoring lane is live: 90.0 mph average exit velocity, 40.2% hard-hit rate, 6.3% barrel rate, .314 wOBA and .345 xwOBA allowed. The monthly trend is not clean enough to dismiss the A’s either: 6.75 ERA in March, 5.14 ERA in April, 4.41 ERA in May, with only 16.1 innings across three May starts and three homers allowed in that span. He has been better recently, but he has not worked deeper than six innings in any 2026 outing, which matters for an Oakland team total that only needs four runs and does not require the A’s bullpen to win the game.

Oakland has the exact hitter cluster to make Buehler’s expected-contact gap matter. The A’s are a top-five OPS team against right-handed pitching, and their righty-split leaders give the projected lineup more than one damage path. Cortes is hitting .324/.405/.514 with a .919 OPS, 11 XBH, 14 walks and only 11 strikeouts in 121 PA against righties. Langeliers is at .316/.394/.574 with a .967 OPS, nine HR, eight doubles, 17 XBH and 18 RBI in 155 PA against righties. Kurtz is hitting .296/.471/.557 with a 1.027 OPS, seven HR, 15 XBH, 37 walks and 25 RBI in 153 PA against righties. Even the lower split table has real punch: Gelof owns five HR and a .466 SLG against righties, Soderstrom has 13 doubles and 17 XBH, and Rooker brings six HR with a .414 SLG despite the strikeout drag.

Padres vs. Athletics pick, best bet

The recent form keeps this from being a stale season-split play. Langeliers leads Oakland in average (.321), hits (59) and home runs (12), while Kurtz leads the club in RBI (36) and OBP (.438). Kurtz also went 12-for-33 with three HR and 16 RBI over his last 10 entering the matchup, while Langeliers owns 11 doubles, 12 HR, 20 walks and 27 RBI. The A’s also won three straight before this series, and Kurtz’s recent three-run homer against San Francisco extended an on-base streak that had reached 38 games. That matters for the shape: Oakland has a leadoff/on-base engine, a catcher slugging over .570 against righties, Cortes’ contact/OBP lane, and enough Rooker/Soderstrom/Gelof volatility to turn Buehler’s hard-contact profile into four runs without needing a full Petco power binge.

The market should stay Oakland-specific. Padres ML at -132/-133 leans on home field and a strong late-game group, but San Diego’s .586 OPS vs. lefties makes that favorite profile thin. A’s ML at plus money is live, especially with Springs owning the cleaner starter matchup, but San Diego’s bullpen is the tax. The Padres’ late group includes Miller, Adam, Morejon, Matsui and Peralta, and that is why the A’s alt team total over 4.5 is only a smaller ladder. Full-game over 7.5 still needs San Diego to contribute against a lefty matchup its offense has handled poorly. A’s F5 team total over 2.5 at plus money is the fun early swing, but three runs in five at Petco is a narrower path. The best main-card number is Oakland team total over 3.5, because it attacks Buehler’s .345 xwOBA, Oakland’s right-handed-pitching split, and the A’s top-five run-creation pocket while avoiding the need to beat San Diego’s bullpen on the scoreboard.

Best bet: Athletics team total over 3.5 runs, playable to -125. Oakland brings Langeliers’ .967 OPS vs. righties, Kurtz’s 1.027 OPS vs. righties, Cortes’ .919 OPS vs. righties, a team OBP of .329, and enough lower-order extra-base pop to pressure Buehler’s 90.0 mph EV, 40.2% hard-hit rate and .345 xwOBA. The smaller add-on is A’s F5 team total over 2.5 if the projected top five holds. The miss comes from Buehler landing breaking balls early, Petco suppressing two hard-hit balls and the Padres’ bullpen cutting off the late path, but the stronger numbers point to Oakland reaching four.

Final score projection: Athletics 4, Padres 3.

Best bet: Athletics TT o3.5 runs (-115) vs. Padres
