Blake Krass gives his pick, prediction and best bet for the French Open quarterfinal match between Aryna Sabalenka and Diana Shnaider.
The World No. 1 is looking to reclaim her throne at this year’s French Open. She failed to win the first major of the year in Australia. Now, Aryna Sabalenka is the clear favorite to win her first-ever title at Roland-Garros. That would set up the potential for her to complete the Career Grand Slam at Wimbledon in a few weeks. However, the World No. 23, Diana Shnaider, is looking for the biggest win of her career.
Here is my pick, prediction and best bet on DraftKings Sportsbook for Wednesday’s quarterfinal match between Aryna Sabalenka and Diana Shnaider.
This is a big moment for Aryna Sabalenka. She made her first-ever French Open final last year, but lost to Coco Gauff. This year, almost all of her top competitors like Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina and Elina Svitolina have been cleared out of the way before she even reached the quarterfinals. Sabalenka is the clear favorite to win her first-ever Roland-Garros title. However, to do so, she needs to keep her focus and not play down to her competition. Sabalenka has stacked four major titles over the past couple of years, but all have come on hardcourt. If she wants to cement this incredible run she has had in tennis history, she needs to add at least one major title on an alternative surface. This could be her best chance to do so, and she needs to seize the moment.
Diana Shnaider is seeking the biggest win of her young career. The 22-year-old has made it to her first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal, already a great achievement. However, she now has the chance to take it one step further, while beating the best player in the world in the process. Shnaider has had more success at doubles through this point in her career, playing alongside fellow Russian phenom Mirra Andreeva. This is the most impressive run of her career in singles already and now the moment awaits her to make this a career-defining run.
My best bet for this match is on Aryna Sabalenka to win by at least six games. This has been a great run by Diana Shnaider, but she does not have the big-match experience needed for a battle like this. There is fair criticism to be made towards Aryna Sabalenka that she should have more major titles. Sabalenka has only won 50% of the major finals that she made in her career. However, she has had the chance to lose a few because she makes so many. That is because Sabalenka takes care of business against lesser competition. The likes of Gauff, Rybakina and Swiatek have given her problems in big finals, but she almost always dispenses of opponents that are not on her level, like Diana Shnaider.
Aryna Sabalenka has yet to drop a set in this tournament, and that trend should continue here. Sabalenka has made the final in seven of the past nine majors in which she has particpated. She is an unstoppable force in these rounds of a major against opponents of lesser quality. Sabalenka should take it to Shnaider here and win quite comfortably in two sets.
