Julian Edlow previews Tuesday’s WNBA matchup between the Las Vegas Aces and Los Angeles Sparks.
While it’s still early in the WNBA season, the Aces and Sparks have seen plenty of each other already. This will be their third meeting over the last few weeks, with the road team winning each of the previous two matchups. Let’s breakdown round three below.
The Aces got off to a terrible start this season, losing their opener at home to the Mercury by 33 points. It seemed like an obvious spot for Vegas to bounce-back and let out some frustration the following game, which just so happened to be in Los Angeles against the Sparks. The Aces did just that, with a dominant 27-point win.
However, the Sparks flipped the script with a trip to Vegas shortly after. Los Angeles went in as an eight-point underdog and got the win outright, led by 38 points from Kelsey Plum. It was a terrific revenge spot, both for the Sparks off the home loss, and Plum returning to face her former team. However, now it’s the Aces looking for some revenge, and the Sparks will be without Plum (ankle) for this matchup.
Strangely, Las Vegas has only played two home games so far this season, and lost both of them. However, the Aces have been terrific on the road, going 5-1. Those five wins have come by an average of nearly 15 points per game. The Sparks have had an equally strange start to their season. They are just 1-3 at home, with a narrow win over a new franchise in the Tempo.
Los Angeles then went on a road trip that started in Vegas, and went 3-1. While that sounds good, Plum was injured in practice during the trip, and the Sparks completely ran out of gas in the finale — a loss to a terrible Sun team. Now, they return home from a successful road trip, running on fumes and facing a much better team without their best player.
Plum’s absence should prove massive in this one, as the Sparks should really struggle to keep up. The Sparks play some of the worst defense in the league, so the Aces should have no issues scoring the ball. Meanwhile, Plum’s 26 points per game will be tough to replace.
This is both a good revenge spot for the Aces, as well as an extremely difficult spot for the Sparks returning home. Look for Las Vegas to open this one up and win with margin.
