Marvel just dropped The Punisher: One Last Kill on Disney+ two months before the character’s upcoming appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. How did the special presentation set the stage for Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle crossover with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker?
After making a brief appearance in Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 last year, Jon Bernthal is back to reprise his role as Frank Castle and the Punisher. The iconic marine-turned-vigilante just got his very own special presentation in The Punisher: One Last Kill that premiered on May 12, but that won’t be the only time the character pops up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe this year.
The Punisher is also going to play a key role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which hits theaters this July. If you need a breakdown of how Frank Castle’s latest story will bleed into his upcoming crossover with Peter Parker, we’ve got you covered.
(Warning: Spoilers for The Punisher: One Last Kill ahead.)
Mayor Wilson Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force captured Frank in the Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 finale, although he proceeded to break out of his cell in a post-credit scene. Some time later, we meet him hiding out in an apartment in Little Sicily after taking out three members of the Gnucci crime family. While Frank was once again struggling to grapple with his post-traumatic stress disorder and the death of his family, Ma Gnucci visited him and told him that she put a bounty on his head.
What followed was nearly 30 minutes of non-stop action. Frank fought through hoards of goons trying to take him out and score a big payday from a mob boss who has let the neighborhood crumble. Even before the fighting starts, Frank saw muggings, assaults and gunshots on every corner. At the same time, some of the chaos might have been in Frank’s head, since he also hallucinated reunions with Karen Page, his old marine buddy Curtis and his dead daughter.
Frank eventually escaped his apartment building and makes it down to the street where Ma Gnucci is watching to see if someone kills him. But instead of finishing the job and taking out the Gnucci family for good, Frank lets Ma get away so he could go help a little girl in need. That girl ultimately gave Frank a paper flower as a reward for saving her, which he went and placed on his daughter’s grave. Frank accepted his role as the Punisher and set out to defend New York wearing his signature skull logo.
By the end of his standalone special presentation, Frank came out of the shadows. He is once again leaning into the fact that he is the Punisher, ready to take justice into his own hands by any means necessary. Frank’s methods don’t exactly go hand-in-hand with Peter Parker’s, however, since Spider-Man famously doesn’t kill.
Now that the Gnucci crime family is still mucking things up and Frank is on the loose, he probably won’t be holding back. Daredevil isn’t there to keep Frank in check, either, following the events of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. With Matt Murdock in prison and the Defenders still coming back together, Spider-Man will have to be the one who both keeps New York safe and stops the Punisher from killing everyone who gets in his way. Maybe the Gnucci family is in Brand New Day, or maybe Peter visits Matt in prison to gather intel or advice. We still don’t know much about the movie’s plot, but we did get a look at multiple scenes between Spider-Man and the Punisher in the first teaser trailer that came out in March.
A few years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, nobody in the world knows who Peter is or that he is Spider-Man. He is keeping an eye on his ex-girlfriend – MJ – and his best friend – Ned – from afar as they attend MIT, rather than making new friends. Outside of going to classes taught by Bruce Banner, he is apparently fully leaning into his superhero alter-ego. Spider-Man even gets a key to the city from Sheila Rivera, who was mayor Kingpin’s chief of staff before his downfall.
The Scorpion is going to come back for the first time since the Spider-Man: Homecoming post-credit scene, while albino mob boss Tombstone is expected to show up as well. Then there’s Frank Castle, the Hulk, Sadie Sink in an unknown role and some ninjas who could be affiliated with The Hand. Tramell Tillman and Keith David are also playing new characters, possibly as part of Damage Control.
Based on the trailer, Peter might be evolving, developing organic web-shooters and other new powers. There is also some kind of mysterious force that is possessing people and jumping between bodies, which we see come out of a tank that Frank was chasing in an armored van before Spider-Man intervened.
A Marvel Television Special Presentation: The Punisher: One Last Kill premiered on Tuesday, May 12.
While The Punisher: One Last Kill has an official runtime of 50 minutes, it is just 42 minutes long not including the credits.
No, The Punisher: One Last Kill does not have a post-credit scene.
The Punisher: One Last Kill is available to stream on Disney+. Frank Castle’s prior MCU appearance in Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 – as well as Daredevil Season 2 and both seasons of his standalone The Punisher show from the Netflix era – are also on Disney+.
Reports first surfaced in June 2025 that the Punisher would appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The first teaser trailer for the film featured Frank Castle in multiple sequences. There is also a third season of Daredevil: Born Again set to release in 2027. Since Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist are seemingly reuniting for that series, maybe Bernthal could reprise his role in that show as well.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026. It stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo and Sadie Sink, among others.
