Alex Hunter details some of his favorite long shot outright winner bets for the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands.
We head to TPC River Highlands (par 70, 6,844 yards, Bentgrass/Poa greens) in Cromwell, Connecticut, for the Travelers Championship. This event has been played at TPC River Highlands since 1984. Keegan Bradley (-15) won the Travelers Championship a year ago, one shot clear of Tommy Fleetwood. The Travelers Championship is the eighth and final Signature Event of the season, and as such, there will be 72 golfers competing for a $20 million purse with no cut.
Below, I have featured two of my favorite outright long shot bets to win the Travelers Championship on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Theegala made some noise at the U.S. Open this past week, finishing T11th at the demanding Shinnecock Hills. He was incredible as a ball striker, leading the major in SGT2G and ranking fourth in GIR.
Theegala has finished inside the top-12 five times this season and now makes his way to TPC River Highlands, where he nearly won in 2022, finishing runner-up by just two strokes.
Fresh off the impressive performance at Shinnecock, Theegala contending again at TPC River Highlands is possible. He is worth taking a chance on at this +7000 price.
Smalley is coming off back-to-back missed cuts, but both were somewhat excusable. First, he missed the cut at the Memorial played at Muirfield Village. That’s a course Smalley has never been fond of, as the missed cut makes him 0-for-3 at the venue. Then, Smalley missed the cut at the U.S. Open last week. This was just his second appearance at this major, so Smalley being sent home early from the challenging Shinnecock Hills wasn’t shocking.
Before this small rough patch, Smalley was on fire and very close to claiming his first PGA TOUR win, finishing runner-up at the PGA Championship and T3rd at the Charles Schwab Challenge. The Duke product also nearly won the team-based Zurich Classic in April playing alongside Hayden Springer, as the duo finished runner-up by just one stroke. This was a very notable performance as the Zurich Classic is played at TPC Louisiana, which was designed by Pete Dye, just like this week’s TPC River Highlands.
Smalley ranks seventh in this field in strokes gained per round at Dye courses. In his last start at TPC River Highlands in 2023, Smalley carded a career-low 8-under 62 in the second round en route to a T9 finish. The 29-year-old returns to TPC River Highlands this week sitting 52 spots higher in the world golf rankings. Smalley breaking through for his first PGA TOUR win this week isn’t the craziest idea.
