Max Fried, New York Yankee at Texas Rangers, $9,700 — Fried has been stellar to start the season, posting a 2.40 ERA, which is supported by the 2.79 FIP, while allowing only one home run through 41.1 innings. The walk rate has been low as usual at 6.4% while the barrel rate and average exit velocity are good at 2.7% and 86.3 mph. The strikeout rate, though, is down at 20.5%. I’m expecting positive regression in that area, starting tonight. Texas is first in strikeouts against left-handed pitching. The ISO is 26th, wOBA 29th and wRC+ is 28th.
Dustin May, St. Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates, $6,300 — May got blasted in his first two starts of the season, allowing six and seven earned runs in four and 3.1 innings. In the three starts since, he’s pitched 5.1, six and six innings while allowing only one earned run in each contest, good for 19.8, 19.3 and 20.5 FPTS. May isn’t a high strikeout pitcher despite throwing in the upper-90s. He’s changed the pitch mix, throwing the fastball more and the sinker less while incorporating a changeup and cutter. May threw the sinker 50% of the time during his first two seasons in the majors. That number descended into the 30% range. It’s now at 18.9% this season.
Freddie Freeman, Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Miami Marlins, $5,200 — Freeman is still chugging along at 36 years of age. The slash is .280/.345/.460 with a .180 ISO. The strikeout rate is a microscopic 10.9%. He has three home runs and 15 RBI through 110 plate appearances. The average exit velocity is 92.3 mph with a 14.8% barrel rate. Now he gets to face Chris Paddack, who has an 8.1% K-BB% and a 4.89 FIP against lefties this season.
Brooks Lee, Minnesota Twins vs. Seattle Mariners, $2,500 — Lee has a .167 ISO through 91 plate appearances. That’s translated to four home runs and 13 RBI. He also has a stolen base while the strikeout rate is only 19.8%. Luis Castillo has definitely had more issues with lefties than righties, as the FIP is 4.65 vs. 2.44 while both home runs allowed have come off the bat of lefties. After not producing FPTS the first three games of the season, Lee has been shutout only twice more, while putting up double-digit FPTS six times. Three of those came in the last four games.
Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels at Chicago White Sox, $6,000 — Trout has eight home runs, 25 runs, 18 RBI and four stolen bases through 124 plate appearances. The batting average is at .234, which has been the par over the last three seasons, but the walk rate is 22.6% with a 21% strikeout rate and .298 ISO. Against left-handed pitching, the wRC+ is 148 while the ISO is .333. Anthony Kay has a 6.53 FIP and 1% K-BB% through 21 innings. Against righties, the K-BB% is -6.5% while the FIP is 8.11. It’s highly likely that Trout gets to see a ton of the bullpen, which is one of the poorer ones in MLB.
Jorge Soler, Los Angeles Angels at Chicago White Sox, $3,500 — Yup, we stacking against the White Sox pitching staff. Soler strikes out a lot (33.3%), but the barrel rate is 11.3%, launch angle is 20 degrees and the exit velocity is 89.6 mph. The bat speed is 74.3 mph, which is in the 78th percentile. He has five home runs through 102 plate appearances with a .224 ISO.
