Dan Johnson takes you through his preview, prediction, and best bet for today’s baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Colorado Rockies.
The late game at Dodger Stadium comes with a postcard storyline and a very lopsided baseball shape underneath it. Los Angeles is 35-20, riding four straight wins and an 11-2 surge, with Shohei Ohtani and Tomoyuki Sugano giving the night its rare Japanese-born starting-pitcher spotlight. Colorado arrives at 20-36, having dropped four straight and seven of eight, and Tuesday’s 15-6 loss had the feel of a series starting to cave in. The Dodgers tied season highs with 15 runs and 17 hits, launched five HR, and watched a reshuffled order immediately create traffic and violence. Mookie Betts moved into a run-producing pocket and went 3-for-5 with two HR and five RBI. Andy Pages hit second, tied his career high with four hits and homered. Will Smith went deep, Freddie Freeman drove in a run, and the lineup looked dangerous from the first spot through the bottom third. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Colorado Rockies.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Sugano’s surface line gives Colorado a respectable starting point at 4-3 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.23 WHIP, but the contact profile is a hard place to hide against this opponent. He has allowed 91.0 mph average exit velocity, a 46.6% hard-hit rate, a 16.3% barrel rate, a .414 xwOBA and a .592 xSLG, with a 5.11 FIP, 4.89 xFIP and 1.51 HR/9 sitting behind the ERA. The stress grows once men reach base. Sugano owns a 5.70 ERA with runners on, a 10.33 ERA with runners in scoring position, and an 8.78 ERA in the sixth inning, all dangerous markers against a lineup that leads MLB against right-handed pitching. The Dodgers are hitting .263/.347/.433 with a .780 OPS, 54 HR, 65 doubles, 173 walks and 214 RBI in that split, and their last-10 sample against righties still sits near the top of the league.
Los Angeles has enough individual force to make a high team total feel playable instead of decorative. Ohtani’s bat remains premium even on a pitching night, with 93.3 mph average exit velocity, a 49.3% hard-hit rate, a 16.1% barrel rate, a .383 wOBA and a .404 xwOBA. Betts’ season has been uneven, yet Tuesday’s two-homer swing in the cleanup lane gives the Dodgers a very different middle-order look if that timing carries over. Pages has earned attention beyond one box score, bringing 90.1 mph average exit velocity, a 46.8% hard-hit rate, a .367 wOBA and a .344 xwOBA into a higher-leverage lineup spot. Freeman is steady against righties with a .818 OPS, four HR, 12 doubles, 20 RBI and 21 walks in the split. Max Muncy adds lower-half thunder with 91.8 mph average exit velocity, a 51.8% hard-hit rate, an 18.4% barrel rate, a .385 wOBA and a .403 xwOBA. Will Smith’s expected profile remains louder than his surface line, and Teoscar Hernández gives the back half another bat that can cash traffic with one mistake.
Colorado’s offense is the reason the full-game total carries more friction. Ohtani enters at 4-2 with a 0.73 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, 54 strikeouts and only 13 walks across 49 innings, and he has allowed earned runs in only three of eight starts. Opponents have managed a .220 wOBA, .248 xwOBA, 88.0 mph average exit velocity and a 3.3% barrel rate against him. That is a suffocating assignment for a Rockies lineup whose recent righty-split work has produced a .674 OPS over the last seven games and a .536 OPS over the last 10-day window. Hunter Goodman and Troy Johnston give Colorado real individual punch, and Ezequiel Tovar can still run into damage, but Tuesday’s three-HR line came with two ninth-inning shots against position-player pitching after the game had already tilted beyond repair. The cleaner read keeps the scoring burden on the Dodgers.
That is where the market points. Dodgers -1.5 comes with an ugly price, and the full-game over asks Colorado to contribute against Ohtani and a Los Angeles bullpen that has been one of the best relief groups in baseball. Dodgers F5 -1.5 has appeal, especially if Sugano’s contact trouble shows up early, but it leaves out the softest part of the Colorado staff. The Rockies’ bullpen has a 6.47 ERA over the last seven days, with Juan Mejia sitting on a rough recent window, Brennan Bernardino at 7.73, Keegan Thompson already at 52 pitches over the week and Victor Vodnik on the injured list after carrying an 8.00 ERA in 18 relief appearances. Los Angeles already punished that late-game group Monday, turning a 3-1 deficit into a win with a four-run seventh. A Dodgers team total at 5.5 gets Sugano’s loud contact early and the Rockies’ leaking bridge late, while avoiding the tax attached to safer Dodgers markets.
Best bet: Dodgers team total over 5.5 (+105). Playable at plus money or near even; a move to 6 needs a better return. The failure mode is Sugano landing the splitter below the zone, the Dodgers stranding early traffic, and Colorado avoiding its weakest relief pockets in a lower-tempo Ohtani start. The fuller setup still favors Los Angeles runs. The Dodgers have the best righty-split offense in the sport, their reshuffled order just produced its loudest night of the season, Sugano’s contact profile is sitting in the danger zone, and Colorado’s bullpen gives this bet a second runway after the starter exits.
Final score projection: Dodgers 7, Rockies 2.
