Bryan Armetta shares his two favorite MLB no run first inning (NRFI) prop bets on DraftKings Sportsbook for today’s slate.
Ten games between 20 teams make up Thursday’s MLB slate. The quickest way for bettors to cash in on today’s action comes via NRFIs. No runs in the first inning can be risky, depending on the odds and which teams are involved. Some pitchers thrive early, while others are more prone to early struggles. Which NRFI bets should you consider before the start of today’s contests?
Ahead of Thursday’s MLB matchups, here are two NRFI bets worth placing on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Pitching has been an Achilles heel for Baltimore in recent years. As part of an effort to get more stability in their rotation, the team orchestrated an offseason trade for Shane Baz. The former Rays hurler has undeniable potential, but consistency has been a frequent issue. Through three outings this season, the right-hander has posted a 4.50 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 13 strikeouts. Baz has failed to toss more than 5.2 frames in each of his appearances so far. Fortunately, he doesn’t have the most difficult assignment tonight. Cleveland is averaging just 3.95 runs per game, seventh-lowest in baseball. In addition, Baz owns a terrific 81.0% career NRFI rate.
It’ll be Parker Messick on the bump for the Guardians. A sneaky under the radar arm entering the year, he’s looked the part of a future ace so far. Over three outings, the 25-year-old has notched a 0.51 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 16 strikeouts. That includes an impressive six-inning, scoreless outing against the Dodgers. To boot, Baltimore’s bats usually take some time to wake up. The Orioles have put up a 11.11% YRFI rate this season, tied for third-worst in baseball. Keeping that in mind, Messick has what it takes to navigate the top of the first.
Seattle, despite Wednesday’s ninth inning meltdown, has been carried by its pitching. That doesn’t include Luis Castillo; the three-time All-Star has stumbled out of the gates so far. He’s recorded a 6.92 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 14 strikeouts thus far. Regardless, it’s early; Castillo’s resume suggests he’ll bounce back sooner than later. What better time than now, against a Padres offense that doesn’t do much early? San Diego’s NRFI rate of 11.11% is tied for the league’s third-lowest mark. Last season, Castillo delivered a sparkling 84.4% NRFI rate.
The bottom half of the inning features another veteran with high upside (and a low floor). Walker Buehler was once a top-four Cy Young finalist with the Dodgers. However, the ninth-year pro has stumbled dramatically over the last two years. With that being said, he’s usually a good bet to pick up three quick outs. Buehler owns a career 75.8% NRFI rate, among the best marks for active starters. It helps that he’ll be pitching tonight at cavernous Petco Park against a struggling lineup. Seattle is averaging 2.50 runs per game on the road, second-worst in baseball.
