A24 is back with another reality-bending horror movie, giving Backrooms a wide release in theaters. So how much money did the adaptation of the viral internet series make at the box office over its three-day opening weekend?
The start of the 2026 summer movie season has been defined by four-quadrant blockbusters like The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, but there has also been a horror movement lurking in the shadows of the box office. Following Neon’s Hokum, Blumhouse’s Obsession and Paramount’s Passenger, A24 released Backrooms in theaters nationwide on May 29. Did the adaptation of the viral internet series live up to the hype and become A24’s latest horror hit?
Here is a breakdown of how Backrooms performed at the box office this past weekend:
Backrooms made an estimated $81.5 million at the box office between May 29 and May 31. That is good for the largest domestic opening weekend box office haul by an A24 movie in the studio’s history, demolishing the $25.5 million mark that Civil War put up in April 2024. Beyond that, Backrooms now owns the fourth-largest opening weekend by a horror movie ever. Only It, It: Chapter 2 and The Conjuring: Last Rites opened higher, with Backrooms managing to beat out Five Nights and Freddy’s.
According to Deadline and Variety, Backrooms made $10.4 million in Thursday night previews on May 28. That cash is counted as part of the film’s $38.4 million Friday gross. Backrooms now owns the No. 4 domestic opening weekend of 2026 so far, trailing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Looking beyond the United States and Canada, Backrooms reeled in an additional $36.5 million overseas. In total, the film is slated to gross $118.0 million worldwide over its opening weekend. Marty Supreme is currently A24’s highest-grossing movie at the global box office at $191.4 million. Everything Everywhere All at Once ranks second at $143.4 million, followed by Civil War, The Drama, Backrooms and Materialists as the studio’s other $100 million grossers. Backrooms is already the studio’s highest-grossing horror movie, immediately leapfrogging Talk to Me ($92.0M) and Hereditary ($87.8M).
