PITCHER

Stud

Spencer Strider, Atlanta Braves vs. Boston Red Sox ($9,200) — In his season opener, Strider predictably struggled, walking five and allowing three earned runs on four hits in 3.1 innings. That game was in Coors Field and he did strike out six. Six days later, he stymied the vaunted Dodgers lineup for six innings, allowing only one hit, two walks and striking out eight. Yeah, I’d say he’s back. Now he faces a Boston team that is 13th in strikeouts, 28th in ISO, 27th in wOBA and 29th in wRC+.

Value

Dustin May, St. Louis Cardinals vs. Kansas City Royals ($6,200) — May is meh for fantasy despite averaging 97 mph on the fastball. The strikeout rate is only 17.9% but the barrel rate is only 6.8% while the 3.81 FIP is much lower than the 4.85 ERA. He’s more of an innings play, having gone six innings in five of the last six starts, with the other start finishing at 5.1 innings. Over that span, May has put up at least 19 FPTS in four of those contests with two at 20.5 FPTS. That ain’t bad for the price.

INFIELD

Stud

TJ Rumfield, Colorado Rockies vs. Arizona Diamondbacks ($3,800) — Rumfield has had an excellent start to the season with six home runs, 17 runs and 22 RBI. The strikeout rate is only 16.4% while the slash is .277/.339/.452. Against right-handed pitching, the ISO is .227 while the wRC+ is 138. Merrill Kelly has struggled mightily to start the season, especially against lefties. Five of the six home runs allowed have come off the bat of a lefty, the K-BB% is -5.7% and the FIP is a whopping 9.48.

Value

Andrew Vaughn, Milwaukee Brewers at Minnesota Twins ($2,800) — It’s only been 26 plate appearances since returning from hamate surgery, but Vaughn has not shown any lingering effects. The walk rate is 11.5%, strikeout rate is 11.5% and the ISO is .190. The average exit velocity is 91.1 mph. The launch angle is only 5.8 degrees, though, while the barrel rate is 5.6%. The bat speed is also only 67.8 mph, so not all is sunshine and unicorns. It’s only been 10 plate appearances, but the wRC+ against left-handed pitching is 229. His career mark is 122 with a .165 ISO. Connor Prielipp has had a decent start to his MLB career with a 3.32 ERA and 26.6% strikeout rate. But the FIP is much higher at 4.37 as he’s been very lucky with a .196 BABIP and 65.5% strand rate. The average exit velocity is elevated at 91 mph, launch angle is 21 degrees and the barrel rate is 12.2%. He has been good against righties, with a 31.1% strikeout rate, but the BABIP is only .212.

OUTFIELD

Stud

Mickey Moniak, Colorado Rockies vs. Arizona Diamondbacks ($5,500) — Moniak has a .378 ISO with 12 home runs on the season. He has been lucky with a .354 BABIP, which has fueled the .315 batting average, but the Statcast numbers are legit – 90.3 mph average exit velocity, 22.8 degree launch angle and 15.4% barrel rate. The bat speed is 73.9 mph. Against right-handed pitching, he’s hit 10 of the 12 home runs and posted an ISO of .408 with a wRC+ of 204. Wowzers! I mentioned the struggles that Kelly has had against lefties so far this season in the Rumfield section.

Value

Zach Cole, Houston Astros vs. Texas Rangers ($2,700) — Through 24 plate appearances, Cole is slashing .304/.333/.609 with a .304 ISO. The BABIP is way up at .417, though, and the strikeout rate is 37.5% with zero walks so far. That said, the average exit velocity is 90.6 mph, launch angle is 19.5 degrees and barrel rate is 14.3%. The bat speed is a ridiculous 76.5 mph, which would place him in the top 10 if he qualified. In nine games, he’s put up double-digit FPTS three times.
